I know this is anecdotal, but the people I know who have committed suicide are not selfish people. They are tortured minds, mostly. My friend in college didn't end up killing himself but I watched him hold a gun to his head and talk about how the people he loves would be better off with him dead. I don't think that's a manifestation of a selfish emotion.

As someone who suffers from depression and has attempted suicide, when I attempted it My life didn't suck but all I could think about was how worthless I was and how much of a burden I must be on everyone. Some of you all have no idea what depression/mental illness can do to your mind.

Exactly. Some of the comments in this thread are flat out disgusting and completely ignorant.

It's harsh, but true.without going into much detail, I myself was in the situation a couple of years ago. Until I realized I was being selfish, and the people who I said would be ”better off” I was just using as an excuse to justify my feelings.

It's good that you have the clarity to be able to look at it that way, but not everybody can see so clearly when they are in the midst of it.

It's hard to understand for anybody without mental illness. I'm lucky in that regard, but I've had a little taste of what depression is like when I had seratonin levels plummet, and it was freaking eye opening.

I understand that. Maybe I was a little too harsh in my OP. guess it's because of my own experience.

I had a list of people that I know personally who have committed suicide. I started to write them down after I realized the sheer number of them. I believe that I was up to 18 people, all males but one. And I don't mean that I barely knew them.

Some I had gone to school with, some I played golf with, some were good customers. I honestly don't know why any of them did it, but two. One lost his wife, and couldn't find a mate. He would often ask if I knew any older single women. Poor guy was just lonely. He was in his early 70's.

The other was having stomach trouble and his father had recently died of pancreatic cancer and he was having the same symptoms. An autopsy showed that he had an ulcer.

I’ve known two people. Both were teenagers. One was the son of a professor who I played high school golf with. People would describe him as a nerd and was socially maladjusted. He jumped off the balcony of his parents high rise apartment building. The other was my wife’s cousin. He was 18 and had just graduated high school. I had just started dating her at the time so I didn’t really know him. He was gay, but I don’t think was officially out. His boyfriend broke up with him and he seemed to be one of the few people who understood him. He hanged himself on New Years Eve

You can't use your situation and then broadly judge every case of suicide. Life doesn't work like that.

And what do you mean people telling you you would be "better off"?

No reservations was one of my all time favorite shows.

I really hate this. I always had a feeling that he was a different personality type. He seemed extremely smart.

When I was younger I never understood how someone could take their own life, but as I've lived longer and experienced life I can see how people can get to that point.

I'm soooooooo very thankful that I haven't dealt with clinical depression like some people deal with. I'm a pessimist by nature and a worrier to boot, so I can see the negative side of things easily. I'm very glad I'm not worse off than I am.

Suicide is a very real issue, and it has grown exponentially over the last 10 years or so. <- that’s the issue

Aside from that, I always watched his shows, but I knew how open he was about his substance abuse history. What a loss.

I agree with what Rose McGowan said: I’m so mad at you! I know that in their acute state, suicide seems reasonable, but it’s so permanent, and so self-centered, and does not look (or maybe it does) at the impact on others.

So yeah, I agree, even though suicide is very personal, it’s also very selfish when you look at the friends and family.

Same here. Maybe it was just the contours of his face or his mannerisms but if I'd see him talk or give an interview he'd come off like he was unhappy and he was forcing a smile/cheerfulness. Didn't seem genuine.

This is such an ignorant comment.

I know someone who has dealt with depression. People who suicide genuinely believe the world would be a better place without them. They have a twisted mind that hates themselves and views one's self as a burden to everone around them. It is a horrible disease and has been scientifically proven to be caused by actual chemical imbalances inside your brain. Furthermore, genetics, traumatic events, and certain medications can even be a factor.

Get a ****ing clue.

I always really enjoyed his shows and he appeared to be a genuine person. There’s speculation that he’s got a shady past that’s about to get exposed (not unlike Kevin Spacey, Weinstein, etc.) and that’s the reason for the suicide. Hopefully not true.

MDMA? Pop a couple 5HTP pills before, during and after, it helps balance you out when you come down.
