Let's say you are on vacation in Florida somewhere, and was having dinner at an upscale restaurant that someone highly recommended. You find an item on the menu that you really want to try, but there is one ingredient that you can't pronounce and have no idea what it is. Do you take your chances and order it anyway, ask the server how to pronounce it and what it is or do you just order something else that you are familiar with?

Did you know I see this all of the time, and lot of people won't order it because of embarrasment?

If I don't know, I ask. Did you know that I sometimes use words just to thow people off? If I have an item on the nightly "Chef's Signatures" that change nightly and I really don't want to sell a lot of, I'll use words that some people aren't familiar with....and it has never failed me. Don't you think human behavior can be very entertaining?

Soooooo many people now days are allergic to EVERYTHING! They are afraid if they don't know what it is, it could kill them. They take that crap to a level I can't even begin to explain. So, given that circumstance, some people won't ask because of seeming ignorant, but won't order it because of fear of a reaction. Do any of you have special needs when it come to your diet?

Would you believe my favorite interaction with a guest at the restaurant, is to go to their table after they complain about a dish I just sent out?

would yu believe that Nat is allergic to fish and my wife won't eat seafood at all?

Do you go to a Seafood restaurant and create your own dish and ask that it not be cooked in the same pan or on the same grill, and to make sure they don't use any utensils that have been used with the preparation or cooking of fish? AND, if they do it will kill (Nat)you?

Isn't it best for her(not for me) to just avoid seafood restraunts all together?

That or, call the restaurant and ask to speak to the Chef. Briefly explain your situation and needs, and ask if he can suggest any options. He will appreciate knowing this in advance and will probably prepare something very special for your needs and will remember you the next time you come in. Would you believe I will make an extra effort for someone like this?

All of the Chef's/Cooks/Managers/Owners that I know Personally feel the same as I do. Don't you think that finding a solution to this growing issue is better than just bitc*ing about it, and ultimately makes everyone involved happy? Even the server, that otherwise would have to spend extra time relaying info between the guest and the Chef?

I feel that it is our "problem"(not really a problem) and not yours as a Chef. Doc says she could grow out of it. She could eat fish at first and then one day bam, it hit her hard. Didn't know what it was for sure untill the 3rd time she ate fish. Do you think there is something that can be taken to help people over come allergic reactions?

Did you know I have eaten fish all my life until I got violently ill twice two years ago from fish? Did you know I am scared to eat it anymore because I think I developed an allergy to it?

I have no idea about the medical side of the issue. I don't have any food allergies that I know of. If I did, and consuming anything that would cause any type of discomfort, pain or death, I would get the necessary information from my Doctor and not trust a restaurant to be my personal medical advisor. Some people, not all, with food allergies that have visited my restaurants, want to put that responsibility on me. Do you really think that is a good idea?

It's a shame everyone has to CYA all the time. Isn't that why Mickey D has to display a sign that the friggin' coffee is hot?

Symptoms?
Same type of fish both times?
Same source/location (restaurant, fish monger)?
Fresh or frozen?
Cross-contamination?

I only ask because, as you know, fish is a very delicate item. If not properly handled from the time it gets pulled from the water, til the time it's put on a plate in front of you, there can be a number of things that can cause illness.

Symptoms?1 step from calling 911
Same type of fish both times?grouper 1st, Tilapia 2nd
Same source/location (restaurant, fish monger)?1st upscale restaurant in Knoxville, 2nd RV cooked at home and she had the same dish.Fresh or frozen?fresh at home, restaurant who knows
Cross-contamination? RV very careful cause we're sort of germaphobes due to her subseptiblity to bacteria
