Another tiresome coaching thread.

We got too many of Butch's losers on our team this year. We'll start winning more once those losers are gone.
Losers is harsh! Just leadership rep dropouts!!
I think I saw somewhere CJP saying we needed leaders to step up, I think he is right

Interesting you used confidence. Vrabel in his interview said the team was confident because they all bought into the game plan against the Texans (or something along those lines).

What do you think has stolen the confidence from our guys?
Losing 8 sec games last year might be a factor, I believe the Titans made the playoffs last year

I get where you’re coming from but your analogy is invalid imo.

Pro players are grown men who’ve made it to the next level. They have to be taught schemes but not fundamentals.

Pruitt is coaching a bunch of kids with huge variances in ability drive and competitiveness. They have to be taught fundamentals and how to compete Pruitt’s way. Much harder slower turnaround.

As an old athlete, when I played, you either had the burning desire to compete and win, or you didn't.
Rarely have I seen a coach that was able to make a player have that super competitive spirit, you either had it or you didn't have it, at least that was the way it was back when I played.
I don't think things have changed much as far as a players desire to be the best and loveing to compete, I sure hope they haven't.

I am in the Pruitt must prove it camp before I trust his coaching ability. This has created some tension and many straw man debates on VN. While I agree his DC pedigree is impressive, I'm not yet sold on him as a HC. Also, I know he gets 3 years or more even if he isnt the right man for our job.
I dont expect this year to be a miracle turnaround. I am not anticipating a strong season.

To adequately explain my position, I wanna draw a comparison to the Titans game yesterday. Titans have a new to head coaching, first time coach. The team had several key people out for the game. But the Titans came out fighting, prepared, and energized. They pulled out all the stops. And, imo, Vrabel simply outcoached O'Brien.

That spark or hunger or enthusiasm (whatever you wanna call it) is exactly what I want to see from a CJP led team. It isnt about winning right now, it is more about the way this team is playing the first 3 games.

I dont believe that expectation is unfair to CJP or the Vols.
Good grief...I wish I hadn't found my readers.

Youre acting like Pruitt was a top choice, non-first year coach. Duh no one is sold on him.

"no one is sold on him"

IMHO, that depends on whether you want to win short term with smoke and mirrors or build a program with a winning system that has longevity. They don't often go together.

My hope is that we have a coach that wants it MOST for TN...not for him, the players, or any other reason before wanting it for UT and the football program. When we find that again, we will have found the next great one. That type of head coach has been missing for years.

Yes, he has no problem getting in people's faces when he thinks they've done something wrong. What I'm talking about is the Saban tendency of not allowing much celebration when something good happens. Stay focused and down to business.
No he pumps the kids up before and during the game. You are correct that he doesn't act a fool.

The coach, whoever it is, can not want it more than the players. I realize part of coaching is motivation, but at the end of the day it is still up to the players to take the fire to the field.

So very true, like I said, when I played sports, you as a player either had it or you didn't, you didn't need the coach to pump you up.

The Titans will be a hot mess with Vrabel. Already showing the signs. You heard it here first.

Maybe so. But only a nincompoop could watch the game against the Texans and not be impressed by the coaching for that one game.

The whole point of this thread is that you’re not a believer yet in CJP, because you haven’t seen that “spark or hunger or enthusiasm”. Ok, two things:
1) We’ve played three games so far, two of which were against total cupcakes. Players, even the best coached and most talented, don’t get super enthusiastic about playing cupcakes. I think it was Will Overstreet on a pregame show before ETSU who talked about how he didn’t get up for cupcake games because he knew he would only play a few series and then watch the rest of the game from the sideline.

2) “Spark/hunger/passion” are ethereal qualities and are in the eye of the beholder. All of you who aren’t seeing a spark are looking through the eyes of a beaten down fan base. I’ve seen a freshman running back get the crowd pumped before a goal line play. I’ve seen a gritty young QB, who was bashed to a pulp last year, come out and fight like hell, showing leadership on the sidelines with his WR group hanging on his every word. I’ve seen a head football coach showing passion and enthusiasm, even grabbing a player by the helmet and screaming at him on the sideline. More importantly when CJP was asked about that incident he said “I told him he needs to look at me when I’m talking to him, he’s going to be a very special player for us”

Of course the jury is still out on CJP, it’s been three games. But I’ve seen enough already to tell he’s is a better coach than we’ve had on the Hill since Fulmer. This Saturday Neyland will be rocking, and the boys will be fired up...WGWTFA

Yes. This. A coach can only do so much to create enthusiasm and desire. A team needs some modicum of leadership from the players. If you look back at the TN teams that were really good, there were vocal leaders on the team. Whether we have any right now....I don't know.

I think there has not been enough time for vocal leaders to completely emerge. If you're going to lead others, you better know where you're going. Otherwise, everyone is lost. I'm not sure there's anyone right now that completely knows where they're going. They may be able to lead in some ways, but they're not yet to the point where they are holding each other accountable. As CJP has said, the coaches are still having to do that.

Can you elaborate on this? What specifically have you seen?

I did elaborate. I saw Banks fire the crowd up before scoring, I’ve seen JG show fire after picking up first downs and then saw him engaged with his WRs who were all intently listening to him, I’ve seen a coach with obvious fire coaching his ass off on the sideline. The right side of our oline could use some juice, but all and all this team seems to be pretty aggressive. We’ll see what happens Saturday night. I can’t wait.

Al Wilson was also a member on teams that went 45-5 (29-3) during his Tennessee career. I love Al Wilson - he's probably my all time favorite Vol, but admittedly it was easier for him and everybody on those teams to get fired up than our current bunch. He came here as a freshman expecting to win, and that confidence and fire only grows when you are a part of really good teams. He saw the examples of how it was done, and he became the example he saw the older he got. If Pruitt is successful, it will take him a few years to build that culture at Tennessee.

I don't know any specific guys, but I think there is a lot of disillusionment on this team with the juniors and seniors, especially the guys who this is going to be their last year. They don't really have anything to look forward to. Even if Tennessee is much better in the future, they won't be there to see it, they know this year is going to be tough, and the years they did experience here were mostly disappointing on the field.

Do we not just have 8 Seniors on this team??

Like not letting Bama players flash the WWE belt when they get a TO. Oh wait...

None of those are examples of why he is the best UT coach since CPF.

You gonna have to give Pruitt time. He was given a team that went 0-8 last year in the SEC. Frost at Nebraska is 0-3, Chip Kelly (who alot on Vol Nation wanted) is 0-3, Willie Taggerett is 1-2 at Florida St. Kelly who everyone thinks is a great proven coach is 0-3. Which goes to show they have to get certain players in their system. I know it's been a rough road foe Vol fans. Rebuild every 3 years after a new coach. Even Saban could not take this team, with this O-line and win with it.

Disagree with the Saban comment.

Kiffin was Terrance Cody's gut from beating Alabama on the road with an o line that was just as putrid if not more so.

That’s just a gut feeling. We won’t really know the answer to that for years.

You can tell if a guy can coach or not during the first year, fundamentals and execution improve game over game. So far the jury is out.
