Do you think Tennessee has competed for championships in the Jones Era?
Where the program is now, compared to where it was when Dooley left is like day and night.
We never beat Missouri when Dooley was here. We lost to Ky. when Dooley was here. We never beat Florida when Dooley was here. We seldom had players go to the NFL when Dooley was here. We lost to UNC in the bowl game when Dooley was here. We have not lost a bowl game with bUTch.
5 seasons into CBJ's tenure, Dooley is still the scapegoat for CBJ's shortcomings, and the bar of success has been lowered to 'winning bowl games'.
Truly sad times for the University of Tennessee football program.
like i said, us not winning the East had more to do with what we DIDN'T do, than needing FL to lose.
as correct as you are about your assertion at the end of October, it's equally true that at the beginning of October, we were in prime position to win it, and most certainly expected to do so at that point.
i'm not arguing the math. just stating that when you knock off the top two contenders for the division, you're contending for it.
When you lose four conference games, you aren't contending for anything
As I said earlier, Florida has actually won the division and I don't think they have been contending.
I define "contending" as being a serious threat to win the league.
No one in the East has "contended" since Georgia in 2012
It happens in this order:
Division Champion
SEC Champion
National Champion
TN contended for the first step... the division championship.
What Butch said was accurate.
Who has lowered the bar?
Everyone making excuses or accepting mediocrity. Many of you try to ignore the last 4 years altogether except for the "good parts". There HAVE been good parts... but major shortcomings have also been revealed. Those decisions and results ultimately land at the feet of Butch Jones. To say it is all "OK" is to lower the bar... unless you think being a mediocre, 2nd or 3rd tier team is where the bar should be set.

I've yet to hear any Vol fan, coach or player say "it is all "OK"". CBJ did say things were "fine" after the SC loss. Other than that Al I've heard is we should have won this and could have done that, but not anything like all is well.
As many that highlight to good part there are the few that only highlight the bad parts.
It's mostly the negabombers that say let's worry about Vandy rather than about getting back to Atlanta in Dec and Jan. So if you want to bash a group for lowering the bar bash te negabombers but not the Sunshiners.
There are plenty of VN posters who have tried to minimize the mediocrity of 8-win seasons with 4-5 SEC wins under CBJ as to be expected because it's UT's historical average.
There are plenty of VN posters who respond to criticism of CBJ with 3 straight bowl wins, as if it is some argument-ending statement that should wipe away all doubts as to CBJ's ability to win in the SEC.
I'd say both of those groups have lowered the bar from where CBJ himself has set it, which is to win the division and play for the SEC championship.
And we still failed to meet that threshold for multiple seasons in a row. I would say that is way worse than winning a 2nd-tier bowl game.
