Another Government Shutdown Thread

The reason it has been problematic is because the Republicans later removed the requirement that everyone have health insurance.

Premiums for those of us who purchase through work or the private market are so high in large part because while everyone in this country gets emergent medical care, regardless of the ability to pay for it, not everyone is paying into that system. As the number of paying customers goes down -- but services remain available -- the cost to those of us who do pay goes up.

The ACA required everyone to pay in. You may think it not in proportion to need -- ok. But it required that everyone pay in something, which got us headed in the right direction. But the Republicans later crippled the entire concept by dropping the mandate that everyone have insurance, either through ACA or otherwise, shifting the cost back to those of us who do pay.

The irony is that the ACA with the mandate benefited everyone, and used the private carriers (not the government) as the platform for paying into the system, whereas now, under Republican control, the system rewards people for not buying health insurance and shifting it to those of us who do pay.

Removing the requirement just cut off the funding for what was just a scam.

the system rewards people for not buying health insurance and shifting it to those of us who do pay

No, it rewarded the funneling of money from those that couldn't afford it and the taxpayer to the carrier to continue the scam as people were dropping.

Well, technically you are buying car insurance as a requirement of the license and driving. Now we can get really detailed into if you like. It would be helpful that good cases are presented to the Supreme Court as it pertains to taxes including the income and property tax problems, but this is a very long discussion. Of course, Roberts framed it insanely as a tax, there are many problems with the ruling.

You don't have to have health insurance, to be honest health insurance is actually illegal now. The forced you to buy a plan or be subject to a potential tax.

I actually don't think anyone can actually figure out what Roberts was even saying.
You are apparently unfamiliar with Tellico Plains. Auto insurance is merely a suggestion. Plus, the minimum requirement is uninsured driver. Hmmm, why is that.

You guys criticizing the change made 20 years ago are wasting time. We are where we are.

If you don't like the ACA, replace it. You've had control over both houses and the presidency for extended periods, including now. And the GOP offers no replacement, just whining about what was done decades ago (that gave Obama a victory you just can't stand.)

No, there is no requirement to replace it. Creating more scams on top seems kind of silly at this point.

Let's come up with the Super Duper Affordable Care Plan - I'm sure that will work too.

This is something akin to saying ‘If you don’t like the sh!t, replace it with sh!t that doesn’t stink as bad.’

Heard it's on its way to reopen. Finally. I think enough Dems and GOPs swallowed that pride of theirs. I hate how polarizing and radical the parties are getting. Good grief.

Why would anyone think that something productive/significant would come from this shutdown? When has that ever happened? Of course next to nothing was going to come from it and workers who didn't go to work will get full back pay. That's how these always work

Paying federal workers back pay for work they didn’t have to do is a fitting penalty for electing these children to positions of leadership. We should all do better.

Dems lost messaging battle....
It seems like it was going pretty well for them until Thune announced that they had backed out of talks where they were getting what they want.

Tim Kaine is the only one who got anything out of this.

Maybe this is the end of Schumer’s leadership role.

Side note: if I was a federal employee, seeing the quotes from the democrat holdouts who act like these 8 betrayed the party and that’s the worst thing you could do… that would be the end of me voting for democrats. (And I sure as hell wouldn’t be voting for Republicans).

If I am a healthy young person, why the hell should you force me to pay for something I do not need? Why do I need to pay for the rampant diabetes of fat asses who eat like a bunch of feeder pigs? And what program where the government has put money into did not make the resulting product or service more expensive and substandard? Off the top of my head, I cannot think of one.

In my younger days, my biggest health risk was an automobile accident. I carried plenty of insurance for that. As I got older, the risk profile changed and my selections did as well. OC has only cost me either money or coverage.

Why are MY tax dollars going to build the roads YOU drive on ?

Also, I'm glad to know that young people never need health care. I'm sure the folks at St. Jude will be glad to hear they can close down.

HA! Bernie just called the ACA a "horrific situation."

So, basically, rather than fix a system he himself calls broken, and which he acknowledges doesn't work, he wants to throw more money at it.

That is why I can't take the Ds seriously on this issue.

If Bernie is aligned one way, then it’s a certainty that you’d be best to be aligned just the opposite. He is Mr Consistency in being wrong on every issue

Periodically shutting down the gov't is no way to run a country. It should be exceedingly hard to do this. A minority should not wield such power.

I'm all about paying the federal workers who worked but the way these things always go is that the non essential employees get back pay too. Essentially a paid 40 day vacation

OK, so what did you want to see come out of this? Surely you didn't want the additional $1.5T in spending...

When you were in school, if you had a class where the syllabus said that said you needed 60% to pass and 47% of the grade was homework, and you didn’t do a single homework assignment, would that be your fault or the homework’s fault?

First item: If there is anyone who does not benefit from the road network (which costs too much because gov. is the buyer), I can agree they should not have to pay taxes for them. I would venture to say people like that are not paying taxes.

I did not realize I said young people do not need healthcare. Please point that out. Using St. Jude’s in a crude attempt to make a political point is special.

The answer's obvious. Please make your point 'cause I'm not getting it from your riddles like this one. I'm a direct guy. I'm not the best at playing games. My apologies

who said "never need health care".

I was one of those healthy young people that got screwed by Obama. I had coverage that fit me to the T.

Covered emergency visits decently, regular office visits, and testing for something I have a family history for. cost me like 50 bucks a month. I was healthy (ish) and only need the regular appointments.

post ACA, I was paying about 200 bucks a month. lost the testing. but that extra 150 made sure my OBGYN and mammograms were 100% covered. as a young male with no real issues, what OBYGN and mammograms? Eff if I know, but Obama made sure I was paying for them. deductibles were way worse too.

I could 100% have put that money to a better use than spending money on something I could literally never use.
