Another Government Shutdown Thread

minus all the cancelled flights, military not getting paid, and loss to US GDP, sure
GDP is one of many relatively meaningless statistics on its own, so who cares.

Plus I was told to vote in my own interests, and if the overwhelmimg majority of military people that are essentially uniformed DMV desk jockeys end up leaving thus reducing my tax burden, fantastic. The military isn't a jobs program and many of the people in it don't belong.

Flights be cancelled? Eh, sure, but that's being overblown too.

Try putting down the media and thinking on your own for once.

If you don't think this hurts the overall US economy then you are blind is all I'm saying. I like having money in my 401k and investment accounts but you do you.

Also calling all military people "uniformed DMV Desk jockeys" is ignorant.

I'll trying to "think on my own for once" now.

1. I said GDP is a single measure of the economy and on its own it's meaningless. It's like thinking because your heartbeat is normal you're healthy, or because it's a little different for a period you're dying. It's idiotic.
2. I didn't call "all" military people uniformed desk jockeys. I said the overwhelming majority. This is based on actual experience. Learn to read and comprehend, old man.
3. It's clear that you'll never think on your own, since you are either stupid or ignorant enough to think one metric is "muh economy" (like the retards that think the stock market is the economy), and because you can't even be bothered to understand basic words in the English language.

Boomer-ass dingbats like yourself are why we are where we are.

Who peed in your cheerios this morning bro, calm down. There's no reason to go full on @sswhole. I'm not even close to being a Boomer LOL

Butch ain't wrong about a great many military members.

I cannot for the life of me understand why people think the standards and procedures for things in the military are so much higher than civilian government. Whenever I say anything to that effect, I get told (or it's implied) that I hate the military.

No, man, what I hate is that you've got the same thing going on there as in the rest of government. You'll have 15 military dudes to do the job of three, and then a team of 40 contractors behind them to help "support" those three jobs, then at the end of the day those three jobs get done shittily because you're trying to delegate tiny, incoherent pieces to 50 people. Let's not even get into how each branch just has to have their own version of everything, with its own development and costs.

Hasnt the market gone up since the shutdown?

Maybe not a majority but for entirely too many the military is just a jobs program with a pension. It's been that way for a long time.
I don't disagree with that but that's not what butchy stated right before I got called an "old man".

No idea. Seems like it's been down for the past 14 days and I'm not trying to imply government shutdown drives the stock market at all, so don't misunderstand. I just simply saying it does affect the economy negatively in someway.

So I'm not sure if it's been asked or answered. Extending the ACA subsidies cost $60M over the next 2 years, where's the rest of the $1.5T going?
I am not registered for either party and have always voted based on issues that are most important to me. I will say that one party is right now making it very difficult for me to EVER listen to them again. They are the problem, and they are acting like children.

Basically, the Democrats are asking for all the funding that was removed earlier this year to be put back in, undoing all that and the majority of Americans felt those cuts were the right ones.

We have one party (the Democrats) preventing the government from proceeding with unreasonable demands that the majority of Americans disagree with. The problem is that schools no longer teach how the government really works and the media is using that to spread crazy headlines that are NOT baked in the reality of how the government works. What the media should be saying is that every American should call their congress person and tell them to pass the CR letting the government re-open and after that get in a room and figure out what to do about the ACA and Healthcare in general.

To add to this, keep in mind, to me, any other issue besides SNAP, paying the military / traffic controllers and dealing with ACA are not issues that should be used to shut down the government - so add the 60M and move on if that is what it takes.

The truth is blatantly obvious to anybody with two eyes. Donald Trump hates obamacare. Privileged Republicans also hate the fact that we have a socialist program that allows people to have basic health care.

The current shutdown exists virtually solely because the Republicans are trying to kneecap obamacare. You know it's true. I know it's true. Unless you are just trying to deny reality.

You may not like Obamacare but I do and the majority of Americans do. Sadly for you, in our Democratic Republic majority rules. So I'm happy that the Democrats are going to force Trump in the rest of his goons to fund obamacare.

Sounds like you need a pap smear.

1. How can a single federal judge force the entirety of government to pay out benefits, and
2. how can those benefits be paid without appropriated funds (beyond digging into "emergency" funds, which I assume won't cover the bill)?

The judiciary wasn't put into place to step on the nuts of both the executive and legislative.

EDIT to add: especially in a situation where the rationale is something as nebulous as "unnecessary suffering".

The government shutdown has not affected my life at all. In fact I forget it’s shut down until I come somewhere like here and read about it.

I understand that is not the case for many people who are receiving govt bennys or doing govt work.

It does make me wonder what I am getting for all those tax dollars paid every year, though.

You have all these people (usually that aren't receiving anything, ironically enough) bitching about SNAP, etc. going away when all I see here are restaurants, churches, and food banks stepping up to make sure people don't "starve".

Beyond the fact that 500-lb welfare queens are in no danger of starving, doesn't this actually just prove that the community itself is more than capable of taking care of its own? Eliminate food benefits tomorrow.

Not in the Navy you don't. At least not when I was in. I did a ground job all week, and then I got to fly on the weekend. Yee haw

From what I've seen the Navy is actually the only branch that makes a lot of people do a bunch of jobs. I think that's just by nature of designing stuff around ships with limited capacity.

The Army is an absolute mess, and for all the gung-ho nature of the Marines the worst case of waste I've ever seen was on a Marine Corps project.

We have also taken ownership of the additional use of food banks. McRib did a fundraiser at hospital and we are increasing donations to our church pantry which is used to help people in need.
Americans always step up to help.
