Bates isn't starting over Austin Smith.

If he couldn't beat out Austin as a true freshmen summer enrollee, what makes you think he can beat him out as a sophomore with an entire off-season under his belt?

Austin Smith not only starts for us next year. But he'll be a SUPERSTAR.

Future 1st round pick IMO.

I watched him abuse people on special teams the entire year. He is a monster! He's going to have an entire off season to get even stronger and faster and most importantly, learn his position!! I agree 100%. Austin Smith will be a starter and a first round draft pick when it's all said and done. 3 star freakin steal! I love taking talent out of Georgia and watching them represent Tennessee!! Butch is slowly building permanent pipelines into Georgia for elite talent and I freaking love it. There is nothing Kirby Smart can do about it.

JRM coming back. Sutton and Kamara most likely following suit. Thought this thread deserved a bump.

My 2016 Depth Chart

QB - Dobbs/Dormady/Guarantano
RB - Hurd/Kamara/Kelly/Fils-Aime

WR1 - North/Malone
WR2 - Williams/George
WR3 - Hardman/Perry/Smith
TE - Wolf/Croom

LT - Richmond/Blair
LG - Robertson/Boulware
C - Thomas/Jones
RG - Weisman/Dickerson
RT - Hall/Kendrick

SDE - Barnett/Phillips/Lewis
3T - Tuttle/D. Brown/Vickers
1T - McKenzie/Johnson/O'Brien
WDE - Vereen/Taylor/A. Smith

WLB - Reeves-Maybin/McDowell
MLB - Kirkland Jr./Bates
SLB - A. Smith/Taylor

CB1 - Sutton/Abernathy/Henderson
CB2 - Martin/Moseley/Miller
CB3 - Foreman//Gaulden/Osborne

FS - Kelly Jr./Warrior/Gaulden
SS - Griffin/Jennings/Berry

Stacked!!!
Am I missing something?? I swear im reading that you have Gaulden third string safety. I'm not sure if you realize how much a ball hawk this young man is. He will be on the field a ton. I expect him to be shifted between nickel and safety based on what the opposing offense lines up in, but he will be electric. D Goodrich type of range and just as physical. I know I know he needs to prove it on the field I'm bug games. If I had any money in my bank account I would bet it on this kid playing a ton and being a difference maker next season unless he gets hurt. Sutton, Kelly, Gaulden all on the field at once is the most intimidating three in the secondary at Tennessee in a long time. We could put up special takeaway numbers with Shoop and this talent.

With regards to WR, Croom has moved to TE and Jennings is possibly/likely moving to safety.

What's up with JJ at safety? Kid can make plays. We need better production from WR'S and on top of all this, North is gone. Unless Berry is moving to offense JJ needs to stay at WR. Hopefully Berry can slip in at slot, or even as a RB every once in awhile

Doug Mathews has consistently discussed them possibly moving JJ to safety, and from his special teams play we can see why. Nothing official or definitive about the potential move but Doug is pretty locked in, talks with the coaches and Bob Welton on a consistent basis. I bet they'll look at their look at who they're able to bring in, look at WR numbers after NSD before deciding. As for Berry, both Mathews and Swain insist he'll continue to work at safety. Things can be fluid though, who knows, we'll know soon.

First off, Josh Smith is the best WR on the team, right now.

Second. On and On about Gaulden. People keep touting him like he is some instant star. He can't even stay on the field!!

How can he help if he's always injured? I'm not exaggerating either. Foreman improved tremendously down the stretch.
And how is everyone counting our All-American Evan Berry out of the safety spot, who housed a int for 100 yards in the bowl game lol??

5"11 210 with 4.3 speed, and can hit like a ton of bricks!
He played safety for the first time EVER last year and people are writing him off because he made a few bad reads...
Berry and Kelly are our safeties for the next two years, and they will be the best tandem in the SEC East.

Gaulden is 3rd or 4th safety at best at this point.
He needs to stay healthy. If he does, he will get plenty of time at Nickel.

Hubbs - Plenty of folks around the Vols' program have pondered the injuries this year, but perhaps none has gotten more "Boy, if we had him" comments than Gaulden's absence. UT folks believe he could be the difference in 4-4 and 6-2, easily.

I almost feel like Nigel Warrior could have the most impact on where Jennings plays next year.

If we bring him in, you've gotta feel good about our 4 safeties and we have a couple versatile DBs like Gaulden who could slide back to safety if injuries became an issue. In that scenario, Jennings probably would give a bigger boost to our WR corps than secondary.

If we miss out on Warrior, then we've only got 3 safeties and depth is an issue there.

I'm keeping Jennings at receiver. He is definitely athletic enough to move to safety, but it would be his third position in 2 years. And the reason he was okay with moving to receiver in the first place was because he wanted to play as a freshman. If he moves to safety he will only see the field on special teams because Kelly and Berry have the starting jobs locked down.

I think we land Warrior and will have him, TK, Berry, Griffin, and Gaulden as safeties. Gaulden will likely get most of the nickel looks, but he can play safety if need be and Foreman can play Nickel.

Highly doubt Berry has anything locked down. IMO the safety spot opposite Kelly is wide open.

I personally think Stephen Griffin wins it.

Will Bates ever earn a starting spot or has he been a slightly overrated player.....I know he had shoulder surgery that delayed his playing time......can Bates crack the rotation or possibly ever start?

Id say we have 4 without warrior. TK, berry, Griffin, gaulden

Maybe moving JJ is something that's best left on the low low until Nigel is in the bag. I see JJ on most people's 2nd team at WR, and have heard he's AA and NFL caliber talent at safety, not moving him is hurting the team and his development if he isn't even 1st string WR. Now if he is moved in the Spring and we get Warrior, that is when it's crazy not get Evan some touches on offense. Venom told us in HS that Evan was a RB and we've seen him with the ball. EB and JJ need to swap sides imo. Unless WR depth is a mash unit again.

The way evan hits the hole on KO I agree. And the way JJ rans down on ST and absolutely lays the wood on dudes. And he had to breakup a couple of potential ints too I remember
