It has to be a .GIF.

JonWard did one for someone else. Start a thread posting the link to what you want, and you may get visited by the .GIF fairy.

Yes. In fact, that's the only way I'd ever set the gif as your avatar. The file would be insanely large for longer than about 5 seconds.
