Anecdotal - Needed the GA win badly

I was there (at ARK), they played Rocky Top and called it quits.

My wife and I are both Pride alums and we were pretty shocked. My understanding was that there were a lot of pissed of alums that lit up Ryder's email on Monday.

On the subject of mislabeled tunes, never call Rocky Top the fight song in front of a Pride member / Alum unless you want an ass chewing.

So my son, Pride member, is sitting in class (economics, I think) last week and someone makes a comment about how badly we need to beat Georgia. The entire class starts muttering about the fact that we suck and we keep blowing leads and that there's just no way that's gonna happen.

Mind you, this takes place in front of one particular student, sitting toward the back of the class, who's actually on the football team. He basically just begins to plead with the class and says, "Come on guys, don't give up on us yet."

That player - none other than Todd Kelly, Jr.

Yeah, we needed that win.

PS. My son also told me that following the Ark game, the POTS director was so disgusted he didn't even let the band play the Waltz. First time in who knows when that's happened. He later apologized for letting his frustration get to him.
EDIT: My son clarified that he may have been incorrect (or not) about it being the Ark game, but there was absolutely a game where we didn't play the Waltz at the end. I was at OU and they played it then. Had to be Ark because he says they don't play it at away games.

So they've been in this class all semester and no one knew that Todd Kelly Jr. was in the class?

Verne is bad, and I mean really bad. But you can't expect him to know that a slow song played by the band after the game isn't the alma mater because that is what almost every school does.

Verne should prolly stfu if he doesn't know what he's talking about regarding an Alma Mater but he doesn't let that get in the way of him calling a game either. :ermm:

Ryder put himself before the program. Should be removed from the position, and I'm not blue fonting.

I can confirm that the band didn't play the Waltz after the Arkansas game. As it was explained to me by pride members his disgust was not with the football team, but rather the Pride/Drum Major.

To me, this is the equivalent of saying "I'm disgusted with you guys. We're not opening the T this week."

It's a juvenile punishment that sacrificed a tradition.

PS - Sorry about hijacking the thread, AV, but I am legitimately pissed that they didn't play the waltz. Maybe I'm in the minority of people who actually care, but to me, singing the alma mater in the band room prior to march to the stadium and playing the waltz post-game are part of the identity of the Pride, win or lose. It's a point of pride (no pun) and tradition, and as a Pride and University alumnus, it bothers me that one man has the power to eliminate it from the Gameday experience because of his "disgust".

They new he was there, which was my son's main point. The class was dogging the team all the while knowing one of them was there. Which illustrates my main point....

man, we needed that win.

No problem, bro. I knew better than to PS the Waltz info. It so deserved its own thread. I imagine the anger you're feeling. My son who's only been Pride a year and a half, was also furious with the break of tradition.

Anyone know why the drum major (and Pride) wound up on his fecal chart?

I wonder what sort of melt down pride members would have if you pointed out the *real* fight song is actually 'borrowed' from Yale?

The same sort of melt down you'd get if you told someone that the tune of our National Anthem is "borrowed" from an old English drinking song.

Most of us (Pride alum) are aware of the background of "Down the Field."

I could of sworn Verne said something like and now Rocky Top gives way to the Alma mater.

It took me a couple of days to see how big the UGA win was. The end game image with the team sitting on the wall and the crowd swaying was one of the better moments in quite awhile

I don't doubt that's true. My point is that there is an inconsistency within the logic. If it's well known that 'Down the Field' is not even 'our' fight song, why would incorrectly saying that Rocky Top (a song totally unique to TN) is the fight song, illicit a bad response from band members? It seems if one is protecting the uniqueness of UT and it's traditions, you would want to protect the things that make it so.

If you listen to people talk about the culture of POTS members, it seems rather cultish to me. Of course, my limited run ins with current/former POTS members supports that assessment. I've known plenty who literally believe Neyland is filled on Saturdays because of them, yet will correct someone who says Tuba instead of sousaphone, or when someone says Rocky Top is the fight song? Perhaps we need to bring in some counselors and do some separation therapy?

I say all of this with affection and good natured ribbing. I have close friends and family who are recovering POTS addicts.
