Two things.

One, UT absolutely should get consideration in preseason talk of a FF appearance. With the exception of no real proven big man, UT has as good a shot as anyone and if there is a coach out there that might be better than even Donovan at four guard sets its evidently Pearl.

Two, Woody Paige comes across as the most glib and disagreeable person on Earth. If her weren't a sports reporter, he'd be a bill collector.

Please Blucrw2, promise you'll come back after the game this winter. I'll love to hear your take on it.

Coaches who have proven more successful with guard oriented teams than Coach Munster: Bruce Weber, Jay Wright, Rick Pitino, Bruce Pearl, Bob Knight, Lute Olsen, Tim Floyd, Ben Howland, Ernie Kent, Lon Kruger, Mark Fox, Paul Hewitt, Mike Kryzewski, Gary Williams. There are others, but you get the picture.

If the basketball team wins a freaking NC this year we have a new sheriff in town -- and i'm absolutely NOT one of these guys that hates Fulmer.

Why? I love me some UTBB and CBP. But if we win a NC in BB it will still pale to UT football in importance. Not a slap at the BB guys at al but the way it is.

Well - as basketball/football fan (probably 55% football/45% basketball in terms of preference) I would strongly consider UT basketball bigger even with all the tradition if we were to win it all this year. You can't just ignore it in my opinion and say it pales in comparison.

But then again there are people that are just more one-sided and either don't like basketball, for reasons unknown, or just don't fully appreciate all of UT athletics.

It also helps that our football program has been struggling (helps our basketball prestige here that is).

Hes called us the class of the SEC.
A definate Top 10 start.
Also, a Final Four team.

It's official there is a man at ESPN that likes Tennessee:fireworks::fireworks:

I've got proof on two - my friend Brett, who is the former sports editor for the Beacon works there too. We are gaining some strength...:clapping:

Not at all really. It's just that UT is a football school first and foremost. Football is the South. Not a knock on CBP or the BB program.

Most informed college basketball fans that I talk to and read are picking UT in the Final Four. I haven't heard a team that is head and shoulders a National Championship contender though so UT is definetly in that class.

I would never try to compete with your knowledge of college bball, but Lute Olsen and especially Coach K to me haven't accomplished as much as Donovan did with the undersized munchkins Donovan insisted on recruiting for his first seven years at UF.

Not saying they have not won a ton. Coach K in particular has had near unrivaled success. And he's done it with prominent guard play. Just not, it seems to me, four of them at once.

Kruger, harkening back to his UF days, nope. He did have Schintzius after all.

Pitino, granted. Weber I'm trying to think but can't really form an impression and I'm sure I'd be wrong anyway, right?

Bob Knight. Christ, here we go again. Don't really see him as guard-heavy though I confess that he did not always have much height on his teams. He seemed to me, though, to be somewhat mmmm.... what's the word... Princetonian?? in his approach. Lots of set plays and cutting to the basket, stout defense.

I was thinking more in terms of speedy perimeter outside shooting followed by full court pressure and in that respect Pearl and Donovan seem quite similar to me.

But, as I say, I'll defer to your take as it is emminently more qualified than my own (on this issue).

Except for the fact that CBP is a class act and Eddie Munster is...

Huh? Donovan hasn't done anything other than be successful. Always complimentary to other teams. Doesn't cause trouble (unless you are the Magic).

1. Look at the teams Olsen and K won titles with in '97 and '01, respectively. 2. Kruger never coached Schintzius.

Be careful. If you poll their peers, you'll get a result in direct contrast to your assertion.

I'll poll no one! That is my opinion.

But more importantly, what do you think about our upsoming BB season and all the national hype we are getting. Is it deserved or are we not as good as being painted.

I stated in the middle of last season that I thought Tennessee would be a Final Four contender this year. The addition of Tyler Smith just buttresses my belief. Carolina, Memphis, UCLA, and Kansas are the four teams I think are better than UT and none of them are vastly superior. There are about 15 teams that should have legitimate hopes of reaching San Antonio. Tennessee is certainly one of them.
