Have a samsung tablet & love it. Brother in law had one and loved it too. He upgraded to a Xoom & liked it better cause of the bigger screen.

I got the Lenovo and I'm pleased.

All the android 3.0 based tablets are basically the same, the main differences show up in thickness, ports, shape, etc.

I'd probably get a Galaxy Tab 8.9 if I did it again.

Samsung, Lenovo, Acer, Asus, Toshiba, etc all have viable options.

I picked up a cheapie. A Pandigital Novel 7-Inch Tab running Android 2.1. Its a basic little tablet. It runs 3rd party Android Apps. No Mainstream apps. It does not have the Android Marketplace. Runs movies pretty well. Only paid $70. Nothing Fancy.

However - does anyone know how to "root" these things so mainstream apps can be loaded onto it?

Wait another month or two and they will be a lot better than the current generation and probably for the same price.

That said, I have an eeePad transformer and it's awesome. But even they (ASUS) are releasing an upgrade to that in the next month that is supposed to rival the iPad2 in specs/performance.

My wife wanted tablet but didn't want to spend the money for a Motorola or Samsung. We ended up buying a B&N Nook for $250, then I Googled how to root it. It was confusing, but with a little persistance, I was able to format and install CyanogenMod, which essentially turned it into a full Android tablet. It doesn't have Honeycomb, but it runs Gingerbread great. Also, it doesn't have cell capabilities, but there's wifi everywhere now days.

I remember a couple short years ago when many people on the board thought tablets (iPad in particular) were a fad and wouldn't have a market.

iPad 2 is prob the best but it seems the cool factor seems the biggest reason.

Plenty of reasons to not go iPad but most reviews I've read of Android tablets suggest there is more than "cool" factor. There are real performance differences - of course you have to pay for them so Android tablets are competitive.

I think they have a market but it's not as easy as people think. We just ran a pilot program with some employees using ipads to help customers and it was pretty ugly. They're still working on it but the main focus, at least for us, is still hitting the smartphone app market

Because people are mindless sheep that overvalue simplicity and undervalue functionality and customization?

I'm going to convert my 50' plasma into a touch screen tablet.

Just a matter of time before Apple announces it and its all of sudden a "must have"

I was skeptical of the tablets at first. Seemed to be half phone, half laptop.

I know several companies have given their traveling sales force (especially ones who sell onsite like construction supplies), and they have really helped in boosting sales. Salespeople can see stock position, pricing structure, and general product help on a tablet that does not take boot up time and can be easily carried in a briefcase.

Also, retailers are finding that tablets are driving eCommerce sales. Easy browsing and does not have the limitations of eCom sites limited by phone screen displays. Makes impulse purchasing much easier.

Asus, from what I heard, was a company that made parts for all the major brands, then decided that instead of just doing that, that they'd also sell their own products. People who sell the products say Asus is great quality.
