And now Sumlin says nope

To be fair is it a "rejection" if a coach is asked how he feels about a job and says he wouldn't be interested? If he's not approached or offered by the school?

If a reporter asks Spurrier "Hey...what if Tennessee called you to coach the team"? And Spurrier chuckles and says "Nah...don't think that'll happen". Would the headline be "Spurrier laughs and says NO to Tennessee job"?

If a fan or the media asks and the coach says “no”, it means nothing.

But if the UT administration or anyone acting on behalf of the school asks, it counts.

I want to hire you for a great job with great pay. I will be your interviewer and your boss. There is a 99% chance I will be leaving the company soon after you sign the contract. I have no idea who my successor will be and there is a reasonable chance they will resent you being here. Here’s a pen.

These unemployed coaches have pockets full of money, Sumlin got a cool $8 million buyout, why jump on a new job, doesn't need the money that is for sure.

I personally like Sumlin but I wondered coming out of the stress with A&M and all that cash - what incentive and real motivation does he have to jump into the fire in Knoxville. He and Butch Jones may need a year off to decompress.

If you think for one moment Sumlin could beat, Saban, Mullen or Smart you must be high on drugs. There's only one they are scared of meeting on the field and that would be Lane Kiffin.

I’d take Sumlin over Kiffin all day long. Nobody’s scared of Kiffin. He’s been a loose cannon at every stop and a marginal to below average head coach.

Could he suddenly and unexpectedly get drastically better at his next job, maybe. But right now, he would be laughed at more than he’d be feared.

I agree...but although we are a dumpster fire with Currie in charge I do think the media is unfairly piling on at times. If Spurrier laughed and said "Nah..that'll never happen"...someone would do a story titled "Spurrier spurns Vols. Says 'It'll NEVER happen' in regard to Tennessee job".

NBC and other Sports show hosts are advising coaches to decline the worst job in the sec.

5th? I’m thinking 10th:

1 Gruden
2 Kelly
3 Mullen
4 Schiano
5 Cutcliffe
6 Gundy
7 Morris
8 Cooter
9 Doeren
10 Sumlin

And that’s not counting any non-public calls they may have made to the Bob Stoops or Bill Cowher types that we may not even be aware of.

This is bad. Really bad.

From Texas A&M ... Sumlin is the 12th man. :)

Need to check your facts, 44-24 as a head coach with a 30 scholarship hit his first year at USC . Agree he can be a loose cannon but that might be what is needed now.

This is setting up perfectly for a Mike Leach hire.

I'm a huge Mike Leach fan. I was hoping Florida would have offered him.

I don't know...A lot of people think Alabama would have won last years national championship if Kiffin had been there calling the plays for that last game.

Cooter was never on any list. He came out through a rep saying he had no interest to a reporter asking

It seems UT has lose interest in UT football...all in a 3wk span...WOW, what a death penalty...I've nothing more to say
