Grandson's first UT game today. He was so excited and that was his Christmas wish, to get to see UT play. So the little fella got an early present. Now, if Grandpa can come up with some funds for the bowl game....

I have been a member of this board for a very long time rarely have i ever posted or do i make comments, but tonight i have something to say. What the hell is anchor down? I was at the game tonight and noticed it was played and used as if it was our "3rd down for what". No idea wtf it means. my suggestion is to refer to all bowel movements from this day foward as "anchor down"

Means they are the boat "anchor" of the SEC! Rock bottom!

:thud:

Anchor down is idiotic. Also at the game tonight noticed, not surprised of course, but our band made theirs look ridiculous. Their pregame is just sad

Leave it to Vanderbilt to come up with the slogan that literally means going nowhere!
Very fitting!
So glad the world got back on its axis today & began spinning the correct way after 2 years off!
What other Fanbase could possibly turn their instate rival's stadium into their own. I don't think anybody but Tennessee could do that. VolNation is incredible!

"anchor down" is a seagoing phrase commonly used by gay pirates when entering harbors in Thailand

I lol'd at this. :)

I guess I'll be "that guy" that brings some facts to obviously funny and yet entertaining thread.

Dropping the anchor: The Vanderbilt Anchor was adopted in 2004 as a symbol of unity and strength and accompanies the team to all home and away games.

The Admiral: This horn is called The Admiral, and is sounded after every score by a chosen member of the Vanderbilt Navy ROTC.

Anchor down: Also known as #AnchorDown or “ANCHOR! DOWN!,” this phrase has worked its way into the Vanderbilt lexicon as the university’s universally known war cry. The Anchor Down cheer is also led by the student section after each Vanderbilt first down.

"Anchor Down" was only "revamped" by James Franklin and not started by him. "Anchor Down" was created in 2005 under then HC Bobby Johnson. Who actually created it is debatable.

The slogan "Anchor Down" has been used by Vanderbilt's football program since 2005. Hope to see it continue.

Did that help clarify it or make it any better of a slogan? No.

Anchor Down means to completely stop a ship. They're probably trying to use it in relation to making a big stop.

Vanderbilt's mascot is a Commodore, which is a retired 1-Star naval flag rank from WWII and before. It was replaced by a new rank in the 50s.
That's why they have all the naval ****. I personally don't care though, there are far worse stuff than what Vandy does, like the Gator Chomp, everything Bama, and that stupid-ass FSU chant.

It was a motto started by Franklin and Co. to rally the team around and have some sense of identity to their otherwise bland football program. As you can see though it doesn't work because Franklin went Anchor Up and left for Happy Valley.
