Chris Dortch » Anatomy of a recruiting class: How Tennessee signed half a team in a month

Interesting read

A quick snippet....

"It may have been reasonable for the average fan to think that, in April, most of the players who could help an SEC program were long gone. That may have been true years ago. But now, with the NCAA’s fifth-year transfer rule, coaching changes, the proliferation of underclassman transfers, prep schools and junior colleges, there are always players available. You just have to know where to look.

Tennessee’s coaches knew where to look. And in a little more than a month, they wrapped up a recruiting class that not only replaced the one they lost. Several recruiting analysts have rated it higher."

Good read, thanks.

Great article. Proves once again that recruiting is all relationships, and it sounds like our staff has a lot of them.

Thanks for leading us to an article that makes me excited for basketball season.
It's great to be a Tennessee Vol.

Really good article, OP. Thanks for posting it. Gives perspective on recruiting and on the players backgrounds. Helps us get to know the players and coaches better.

Great read and after comments. Don't it make you feel like a bunch of teams are going to dread Donnie and his Vols coming to visit them? I think we are headed toward awesomeness.

his mentioning the assistants not being a "yes" man, giving their input and CDT rolling with them if it makes sense is a big reason this staff should be solid.

That was a fun read. It's always interesting to get some insight on what goes on behind the scenes.
You can say what you want, this coaching staff is getting it done! Dave Hart is brilliant!

Going to be interesting to see this team perform this fall. Very nice piece written.

And people wonder why players come or go based on coaches. Recruiting, like life, is about relationships. That article provides great examples how coaches network and use their connections. I enjoyed reading it.

Great read. Really good insight and info.

What strikes me is not only the quality so late in the game. But as the end of the article states "the staggering" of players by eligibility remaining. That is huge for us in years to come. Butch is dealing with exactly the opposite over on the gridiron and it sucks.

Managed to rise to #41 in the 247 team rankings, #7 in the SEC. Not bad for a class assembled in 3 weeks, after the final signing period was already under way. This is ranking the top 4 signees btw. Doesn't include any transfers.

The bottom line is this quote:
“Two things come into play for me,” Tyndall said. “First of all, the talent we were able to sign this late in the game. And second, we could stagger the classes. We got two fifth-year guys, two JUCO guys, and three high school players. That is very seldom the case.

“I’m very, very pleased. We got guys that fit our system, guys with length and athleticism and the ability to make plays off the dribble. The way it unfolded was perfect.”

Thanks for sharing, OP. Great read, and what a whirlwind CDT and assistants accomplished in one month, 8 signees all with necessary skills to compensate for what we lost.
