Dear Coach X,
As you board the private plane owned by the University of Tennessee, your new employer, I would like to give you a couple of things to think about.
Say goodbye to Utah/Air Force/Texas/the NFL/wherever that you are from, and remove all expectations of your new job. Being the head football coach at Tennessee is something completely different then you have ever experienced. Enjoy the ride. Take it all in.
We were recently jilted by someone very close to us, do not repeat his mistake. Coach X you will soon find that if you embrace the spirit of what it means to be at Tennessee then this city and this fanbase will embrace you. We as a group will be capable of lifting you up to heights you have probably never experienced.
Do not make empty promises, do not guarantee results. Work hard; we expect the same from you that we do the players that put on the power T, we expect you to give your all for Tennessee. If you do this, you can expect that unwavering support and admiration of an entire city. You will become a star. We will defend you in our homes, bars, workplaces, schools, and amongst our associates. We will buy magazines, t-shirts, and bobbleheads that bear your likeness. Give us excitement and show us that it truly means something to you to wear the orange.
Do not fake it, we will find out and it will crush this city. Do not ignore our past. Tennessee has been playing football since before your great-grandparents were born. You can place your stamp on our program (and do not doubt for a second that it is OUR program, as in all of us: you, the fans, the players), but do not ignore what got us here. Embrace General Neyland's maxims, embrace the Vol Walk and learn to sing Rocky Top. Wear the orange with the same pride and admiration we expect from the players.
Football here is a religion, and you just became the Pope. Lead us well and we will adore you. Lead our boys to victory and we will exalt you. We have faith in you, do not let us down. We will be with you until the bitter end, and we expect the same from you.
Above all Coach X, welcome to Tennessee - its gonna be a hell of a ride.
Signed,
The Vol Faithful
