for both me and the Vols. Since my team (UT) and my alma mater (Vandy) were both shown the door in their first game, my only goal was to stay until Kentucky lost. MSU took care of that, so I headed home a day early to watch the finals from the comfort of my living room. A few thoughts on the experience:
1. The level of play this year in the SEC was better than I expected. Arkansas and Mississippi St especially have better talent than I realized.
2. UT still has personel disadvantage to most teams in the conference. With only one senior, this should change some for next year, but right now we are undermanned, expecially inside, against just about everybody we play. It is a testament to Pearl that we keep finding ways to win, but it is not a recipe for tournament success.
3. The officiating thoughout the tournament was terrible. There were enough blown calls in the UK-MSU game alone to taint the tourney.
4. With the 4 freshmen getting lots of minutes at UT, Beverly at Arkansas, Meeks at UK, and Soph Gordon at MSU, their is an impressive group of young players poised to shine next year.
5. Even without Tyrus Thomas and Ronald Steel, Alabama and LSU have way too much talent to have 20 conference losses between them. It is a toss-up as to who has done the least with the most.
6. The Vandy dance team is among the most impressive in the conference. They almost make up for the cheerleaders. That tear in my eye was from pride.
7. The bars in Buckhead now close at 2:30 instead of 4:00. For a man out celebrating his birthday, this is a good thing.
