My sister-in-law is a Physician in Raleigh, NC. A Doctor in her practice was a good football player in high school in the late 60s and was recruited by Coach Bryant to play safety for the Tide. He accepted and soon after signed his scholarship papers. In the late winter he received a pre-registration packet, chose his classes and schedule and sent it back to Alabama. A short time later he received another packet with his class schedule and a reporting date for his physical exams and fall practice.
The young man’s parents were both Doctors and he aspired to become one too. So with a little prodding and pushing he decided to give up football and attend the University of Virginia to major in pre-med. He sat down and wrote a letter to coach Bryant thanking him for the opportunity and advising him that he would not be attending Alabama in the fall.
He never heard anything back from Alabama. He soon put it out of his mind and enrolled in UVA and concentrated on his studies.
During winter break he returned home to spend the holidays with his family. Shortly he received another packet from Alabama. It was a registration form for the next semester and his grades from the fall. He made 5 Cs. He laughed it off but was somewhat dismayed as he had never made a C in his life. He reasoned, probably correctly that he and likely others received Cs so if they didn’t pan out the university could give them an F or two and yank their scholarships.
Most people wouldn’t believe this but college football fans, sports writers (who mostly kept quiet) and anyone with a brain knew this went on across the country.
PS. The doctor being a huge football fan kept the grades from Alabama in a small frame in his office and liked to tell the story from time to time.
