In KNS article Dooley says concerning the talented freshmen WRs:

"Dooley said he doesn't intend to force the talented bunch to learn the entire playbook before letting it see the field.

"Early on we'll try to push them, see how quickly they can learn," he said. "We're also not going to let our ego as coaches get in the way. If the guy's really good and he can only run two things, he's going to do two things."

NOT DOING THIS as much as any other factor sunk Fulmer as a coach. To the very end he held to the idea that "if you stay you'll play" and gave preference to the veteran players. It not only hurt UT on the field, but KILLED us in recruiting!

PS- please don't turn this into another bash Fulmer thread. That is not my intention.

I like that.

If Da'Rick can only run a fly and a hitch and go, then so be it. He is a beast and needs to be on the field...we have some very talented freshmen WR that need to make plays.

I'm glad coach Dooley wants the best players on the field regardless of their class.

The more these freshmen can get on the field and play. The better it will help Tennessee in recruiting.

I wouldn't expect Dooley true freshman to blow away the statistics for true freshman. No doubt many will play, no choice due to limitations of the roster.

We will see how many climb to top of these charts.

Agreed. I also think what killed Fulmer was that player development seemed to be lacking with him and his staff (with the exception of Cutcliffe maybe). I think getting the players experience early is part of that development, even if they only know a couple of things. If they are talented and can make plays, get them on the field.

Dooley is hilarious. I'm glad he has a sense of humor. Two things done all-americanish are better then many performed substandardly.

Fulmer played young guys. He just couldn't coach 'em worth a damn.

yeah but he was very reluctant to play them tho.

to the OP: i agree w u. its easier to attract the high star recruits if they see they can play early. and you also have to prove to them that you can coach them and get them to where they wanna go

Only if it was evident they were better than seniors. He certainly let a lot of good talent go to waste too. And you're right he sure didn't improve the talent. His players left here with the same talent they arrived with for the most part, unfortunately many even regressed.

Doug Dickey made Tn. football relevent again. Johnny Majors built the foundation for greatness. Phillip Fulmer recruited talent and won a national championship. Regardless of anything else that is said, this is how Tennessee Football is known.

Coach fulmer was old school in that way, that was the way they did things in the generation he grew up in. And sad to say because the game had passed him by.

This go's way back to Gen. Neyland because I remember having a conversation with a older gentalman some years back. He told me that he had played 2 yrs of baseball & football at tenn tech then transferred to UT
his Jr yr. He went to neyland and wanted to join the team he told him no you have already used 2 years of eligibility. Then he told me neyland wanted 2 yrs to beat the crap out of you then play you your Jr & sr yrs. So the old "those who stay will play" go's way back.

But times has changed and coach fulmer couldn't keep up sad to say because IMO he was a damn good coach. Bash me if u want to I don't care.

Phil apparently thought the only thing Lucas Taylor could do well in 2005 was run a reverse. Thus, every time he took the field, you knew we were running the reverse. Every. Single. Time. Shocking that our offense was so horrible.
