That felt like we won a game last night watching Arizona pick apart Memphis. They were up 12 at one point with about 3 minutes left, I think it was an 8 point win at the end. My fiance' worked at U of M and is still a BBall fan, so I get so sick of the comparisons. I guess that is why i loved the game last night.

Not saying it helped us OWH, I guess I feel the same way about Memphis that I do about Bammer in football, I consider every loss they have a moral victory for us. I know it takes away from the victory over them (Georgia in fball) but I like it anyway.

Also, Memphis performing poorly will eventually lead to recruiting success for the Vols should we continue to improve.

I follow the school of thought that it looks better when teams we beat play well and win against other opponents. JMO

Kiddiedoc makes an excellent point, however.

if memphis and ok st. are the wins we are hanging our ncaa bid on then we need them both to win. i'm not sure how we'll do in the conference schedule this year, and i doubt we get by ohio st, so i'd like our non con wins to look strong in march.

The recruiting effect is overrated. We rarely go head up with Memphis for a player. Other than Willie Kemp, there's not a guy on the Memphis roster we were ever really in the running for. There's not a single guy on our roster that Memphis treated as a priority recruit.

Memphis is just young - give them a little time and they will pull it together later in the year and make the Vols win over them look a whole lot better.

Well. . . .that's my point. If we can continue to build ourselves into a national power and keep the media's attention that Pearl and this exciting style of play have attracted, that just might change.

You only have to look as far as Coach Cal's pre-game comments to understand the historical view of UT hoops. Big non-conference wins, competing for the SEC crown, and a few nice showings in the NCAA tourney will go a long way toward making that view nothing but "history."

Memphis hasn't had an easy schedule. If they don't play a good non-conference schedule, their SOS/RPI will be very weak, because no one is left in C-USA after Louisville, Cincy, DePaul, etc. left for the Big East, except for maybe UAB. I like to call C-USA the MAOC (Memphis And Others Conference).

You mean Coach Cal didn't go after Jordan Howell?

:)

If Pearl tries to make a living beating Cal for guys from the northeast and Laurinberg Prep, he's not near as smart as I think he is. UT and Memphis will rarely ever cross swords in recruiting.

I have to agree with hat here.

Also, Memphis is overrated this year. Not top 25 material. No go to guy is hurting them a lot. Plus Cal's X's and O's is lacking, especially when he comes across a coach like Lute Olsen. Cal has to rely on his athletic recruits to win. Cal can be stubborn with his adjustments (more often a lack of).

This comes from someone who follows the basketball program moreso than other basketball programs. Not that it reall matters, haha.

Opponents vs. higher ranked opponents that our program has played on the court (win or lose) jacks up our RPI if said opponents do well!

It would just hard for me to cheer for some of the teams that we play against, one of them being Memphis, even if it did help us because we had beaten them. Coach Cal acts like UT doesn't even belong in the same conversation as Memphis when it comes to basketball.
