Am I missing something with South Carolina?

How can you be certain South Carolina has more talent? They barely beat us in our worst year ever.

I honestly do not think anyone know what kind of " talent " we have.

I may get flamed for saying this but I honestly believe that Dobbs was so good at masking all of the faults in Lyle's offense that when he left you could really see what kind of coach Lyle was. We played a west coast style read option that has proven to really not effective against the best lineman in the country.

We may come out and be a lot better than most people think. I may be wrong, but I honestly think that our new staff is going to get our kids in position to give us the best chance to win. We are not going to go undefeated , but I honestly think we have more " talent " than what most peeps give us credit for.

Just my thoughts.

You don't see it in USC, but see Fla. as 2nd; now that makes a lot of sense.

Florida had a bunch of players suspended last year.... That was a big part of their suckitude last season. And they still beat us and almost beat South Carolina. Now, they get a lot of those guys back and have a great coach who is offensive minded and knows how to get the most out of his qbs. Keep in mind that Florida had been able to dominate the pitiful East without a QB or any kind of offense until last season. That is why I see Florida as the #2 team in the East.

At worst, our defense should be much improved. If it's not, CJP was overrated as a defensive coordinator or he just didn't have enough pieces to put together a good defense. I think it's crucial to his success here to have a good defensive showing this year. Losing sucks, but if we lose close to the big SEC opponents it would show progress. We shouldn't be getting blown out by 30 points this season and I think we can surprise a few teams that we maybe shouldn't beat, on paper. I'm not talking about the 3 big SEC teams we face this year either. Aside from Alabama, Auburn, and Georgia, I believe we can find a way to win.

It seems a lot of people think they can compete for the East this year. I dont see it. What am I missing? Last year, I saw a South Carolina team that was slightly less sucky than UT in a year where the Vols were historically bad. If Pruitt is the guy we think he is, the Vols should be at least third in the East behind Georgia and Florida. I just dont see any reasons to believe that South Carolina is going to be relevant in the East this year. Thoughts?

South Carolina is the tallest midget.

For those wondering how a team stacks up talent wise, 247 has a tool that ranks based on the total number of stars (3, 4, 5, etc.) on the roster. Even with this, it's still debatable, but it gives you a decent baseline to start from. Unfortunately, it's not updated for 2018 yet so this is 2017:

2017 College Football Team Talent Composite

So based on this, Tennessee was the 2nd most talented team in the SEC east last year.

The only thing any of you might be missing about SoCar is mustard BBQ sauce. Now, that's a topic for endless debate.

Good job going out of the way to squeeze that in there.

It’s like taking candy from a baby and shoving it up his butt so when the dad beats the DNA out of him...the baby doesn’t get the candy back. :cool2:

I know we sucked last year but that does not mean we are not talented..bad coaching can ruin a team..
It's not like these guys forgot how to play football..
Also like CJP said..there are around 30 players that did not play in the spring that is on campus now....
We are going to surprise a lot of people..Not saying we gonna win the east but we gonna be a lot better than advertised....

Well, I mean they went 5-3 in conference play, we went 0-8. Look at their whole body of work last year and returning starters. They aren't an elite team or anything like that, but they finished strong last year (second half was better than first). Lost to Georgia by 14 instead of 41.

That's fair. Help me out by giving me an example of "truth" and "fantasy" in this thread.

Truth:
The East is garbage outside of UGA.
USCe has a great chance to finish 2nd in the East.

Fantasy:
Vols will finish better than Gamecocks in 2018.
Muschamp is a pushover.

Yep. Coach Boom has never lost to Tennessee. More specifically he never lost to Butch, so hopefully it was a Butch thing.

The only thing I see is maybe schedule if USCe beats Georgia. If Georgia smacks them down in week two, probably not going to be SEC East Champs. We have a lousy schedule around USCe, so it will be a tough game for us. I hope do be surprised.

The only reason I can come up with for skepticism about Georgia, and it isn't a convincing reason at all, is that it seems too obvious they are going to win the East. I can't really come up with a reason why they shouldn't win, other than "it's Georgia and they always find a way to mess it up" but they got that monkey off their back last year already.

They have lost quite a few guys on defense, and I suppose the injury bug could bite them, but they are so deep and have recruited so well they are even at least partially immune to those things (a lot like Alabama).

The Georgia/South Carolina game is early in the season and in Columbia. Perhaps Georgia enters that game not quite ready to play, gets upset by South Carolina, then has one more conference loss (probably to Auburn), and South Carolina ends up being pretty good like some expect and has only 1 or 2 conferences losses themselves. That'd be an extremely disappointing season for Georgia and rather shocking to me, but I suppose stranger things have happened. That's about the only scenario I can come up with.

We were a couple botched plays away from 6-6 last year, including potential wins over SC and Florida. Our team is not devoid of talent like some believe, and our players should be better developed physically and talent wise. If the new staff can get the most out of our players and we are better coached with a better scheme on both sides of the ball, I see no reason we can't beat SC this year. It won't be easy, but we can win.

since Spurrier went there, Scar has been consistently over rated.....to be fair, a few years in that mix, so were we...

And if Ga. Tech doesn't screw up and the UMASS QB doesn't get hurt, UT would have been 2-10. Goes both ways.

I mean, even in the middle of that total and complete meltdown last season, we still almost beat SC, Florida (in Gainesville at that...) and Kentucky and even managed to keep the LSU game pretty close for a good while. With pretty much even a mediocre coach who knows even The slightest thing about football, we probably win those first 3 and take LSU to the wire. That’s a 7-5 or even the potential of a 8-4 season right there.

Opinion. You haven't seen anyone play yet.

Who said they didn't?

Opinion. We may not, but finishing better than SC is not a Fantasy.

Who said he was?

I wouldn't put much stock in predictions....a lot of people thought UT was going to compete for the east last year.

They have a qb and a good defense...a proven qb

Bentley is a good, solid sec qb, nothing more, nothing special. Getting Samuel back will surely help him, but he’s not putting that team on his back and winning big games by himself. I guess “proven” applies, but he’s no better than the 5th or 6th best qb in the league this year imho.
