Alvin Kamara on the football experience in Knoxville: "F---ed up"

It ended up working out well for him, though. He was able to showcase his skills enough to get drafted high and not put on a lot of mileage, which is huge for backs.

Witch Doctor think Jones must have over-promised kids and that caught him with Hurd and Kamara. Witch Doctor say the biggest shame is right now RG should have two backs killing it in the NFL (Hurd wasnt a bad player) and Kelly right behind them

Witch Doctor huge Kamara fan and double check his stats or watch when i can.

Kamara got the best of all worlds. He didn't get beat to death like Hurd due to no blocks, and still got drafted and gets to be a star at the next level. As long as he doesn't become a kneeler he's all good.

If Hurd had just stuck it out a few more games, he would have been our all time leading rusher, gotten drafted in the second round, and be making bank. Instead he's hoping to catch on at one of the nation's worst programs. I don't care what Butch did to him, he was better off keeping his head down. He would have left a beloved VFL as well instead of a punchline.

I wonder how many other good players were on the bench for stupid reasons . Maybe this is the root of the talent exit during Jones tenure. Good , even great players dont help the team if they are not on the field. Butch is his own worst enemy, from the stupid, unnecessary comments , to the terrible clock management, he goes brain dead under pressure.

This was a no win situation for Jones and would have been a no win situation for almost any coach.

Hurd was already at Tennessee. He was a highly touted "in state" recruit that folks anticipated to be the next big running back. He had been productive. Kamara transferred to Tennessee knowing full well Hurd was there and was the starting RB.

If Jones had started Kamara over Hurd, all of you making a big deal of this would have been complaining about Hurd not starting.

Some of you live to complain.

No win situation.

Hurd was overrated.

He got away with it in high school when he was faster than everyone else.

In the SEC, it’s a whole another ball game. He was always getting chased down by Defensive Lineman & Linebackers.

Kamara is simply the better RB and should have played more while Hurd should have sat more on the bench.

Damnit Butch!

Yea, Hurd had that Highschoolitis...a condition where running backs just try to outrun everyone to the corner because it worked in HS...he needed coaching but that vision to see the cut that guys like AK have is more intuition that teaching...

Hurd is a killer athlete and can probably play in the NFL at several positions - but probably not RB...

I say the same about the Bama QB Hurts...he could be a RB, LB, Strong Safety, etc...he has a high football IQ but doesn't seem (to me) to have an NFL arm...

Do you know that CRG did not voice his opinion on Kamara and was shot down? No, I do not know the answer, but it has also been stated numerous times that Butch was a micromanager and would not simply get out of his own way.

Why didn't Robert Gillespie step up........suppose to be one of our best coaches

You say that like you know for fact it didn't happen.. He very well may have spoke up and been told to mind his business by Butch. Not unlike Butch to micro manage..

We will most likely never get answers to questions like this..

Edit: Haa cabvol.. Didn’t see your post..

Personality. I don’t think Jones liked Kamara. Eccentricity was probably reason enough for Butch to overlook talent. AK is a unique type for this area. New Orleans is perfect for him and he feels completely comfortable. He couldn’t have landed anywhere better and I’m glad to see he’s doing his thing. I have no reason to think he doesn’t balance the untamed and unapologetic personality with responsibility. Hopefully he keeps that balance because AK is about to blow up in a big way that can often be a persons undoing. Just imagine all the other talent that was overlooked.

Hurd was overrated.

I don't agree Hurd was overrated. He ran hard while he was here. I'm biased, but the I-formation plays against Northwestern were things of football beauty. The fact that Butch had to prove he was a man and purposefully take them out the following season and make Hurd take a hand-off 5yds back from standstill irks me to this day.

Gruden would never have done that.

Wish we could go back and put Dobbs, Kamara and Hurd on the field at same time, a few packages with that combo and I think we would have won some of those "Tight" games might have squeaked out an SEC title...

CRG was the position coach. CRG would have given input on who started and who didn't. He is not blameless if Hurd was given the nod over Kamara.

And most RB's want to be used just enough to showcase their skills and not get beat up. Kamara actually got the better deal - showcased enough for NFL to notice while not beaten up by touching the ball more.
