Aaaah ha ha, I love people. The endzone checkerboards were a nice addition from the 60s, and then somewhere in the 00s the marketing messages really amped up the signal-to-noise on the checkerboards as a part of the Tennessee look and experience. They've gotten so big that they're even on the uniforms now (for better or for worse -- to each their own opinion on that one). Essentially, the checkerboards have achieved iconic status.

Aaaaaaaand no sooner do they achieve that status than folks want to start tweaking and fiddling with them.

I'm not trying to hate on this idea much, well, not more than I'm compelled to. I just have to laugh. It's inevitable. We just can't be satisfied for long anymore, not these days. "The checkboards are an iconic and signature element of the Tennessee experience!" "Those are cool, now let's CHANGE 'EM!!" Comedy gold.

Leave the field alone. The only changes I want to see to it is when a hardier and greener strain of grass seed is developed. No artificial turf, either astro-turf or the new and improved crap Murvul and GCA uses, and no special paint schemes.

Only time the latter should be done is if Neyland one day hosts a bowl game.

Orange and White Endzone trimmed with the new gray so the refs could see the oob line. /Thread.

You guys have no creativity.

It's for one freaking game. This isn't like a life changing thing. I promise you won't die and the world won't end if they were to paint the endzones gray and orange. It is an official school color afterall.

I mean hell worse things could be done. Say like making 100,000+ fans try and recite the maxims before every game.

But it'll look stupid as hell.

Why put up a poll if you're not gonna like the answer?

Maybe in a year or two to rekindle some hype. Geesh, were overloaded with it right now. No need to waste any.

I personally don't like the grey, after all it is Orange and White

as to recruits being in love with it,didn't a survey by ESPN say that uniform style and colors were the last thing they would take into accountant ?

Sorry, Coug, I just think it will look contrived, like trying a little too hard. And not sure the lower contrast will look good on a green field.

All for innovation and creativity. Think we do that best by keeping some tried & true "foundation stone" traditions as they are, and build upon them with new ideas. The orange and white checkerboards, along with running through the T, are two of those things that needs to remain a constant, part of the base. We can build off that in plenty of ways without changing those two gameday foundations.

You realize that the orange and white checkerboard endzones weren't always there? Gray is in fact a school color btw.

They're already planning on this. For one game this season instead of having orange and white checkerboard endzones they are going to invert the colors and have white and orange checkerboards. I hope the traditionalists won't think it's too extreme.

This was hilarious! :) Thanks for the laugh!

This is where I think people are getting upset, perhaps confused even. I'm not proposing a permanent change here by any means. Nothing will ever trump the awesomeness that is the orange and white checkerboards, I'm simply proposing a one time experiment if you will.

People reacting as though I'm trying to up end their world is pretty funny though.

Maybe, maybe not, nobody has seen it.

There are two sections to these types of threads. The poll itself, and then the thread posts where people can freely speak. As to why I'd voice my opinion, to stimulate further conversation.

I'm not confused -- I'm amused. Big difference. And I stand by what I said, which is that people have a predilection for making nudges and changes. Even for iconic things, there's just that "we should try this one little thing ..." Doesn't matter what or how big the thing is, there's always people wanting to make changes. Anyway, the checkerboards, as you said, are awesome, and further I'd say they're a college football cornerstone, and I think we'd far better off leaving them as their awesome selves. From a color perspective I don't think that shade of grey would hold up on a checkerboard pattern of that size (grey and orange isn't a good match in my mind anyway but such is marketing and apparel company influence). In my mind it's going to end up rather ghastly, actually, with that weird contrast striped across each endzone.

Hmm, Coug, it's like you meant to respond to someone else. I didn't contest either of those points, I don't think. All traditions, even the most beloved, have a beginning, this is always true. I would never deny that. And yep, I did know grey is a school color, along with the "complementary color" blue formerly used by the Lady Vols B-Ball team.* Of course, we are still 99% all about the good old Orange and White. :good!:

I think maybe you accidentally clicked on my post when maybe you meant to respond to someone else. They'll be disappointed, I've stolen your attention away! :hi:

Is that the color palette that came out after the Gray unis were introduced in 2013? In every media guide I've ever seen the official colors are Orange & White.

I don't have a problem with the alternate unis. I like them. I just don't think it was necessary to create the story that gray is an official color. That was simply to get fan "buy in", IMO.

IDK, Boca, someone linked that site for me shortly after I joined VolNation (just 5-6 months ago), when I asked about the "true" Tennessee orange. The grey was already there then. No idea when it was added before that.

I like Coug but glad that you pointed this out. When I read his response to your post, I was wondering how one related to the other in any way.

The way things are heading in college sports they'll probably replace the checkerboard with swooshes.

The checkerboard comes from the clock tower at Ayres and General Neyland making direct reference to it within the context of football.

The orange and white were the only original school colors. The gray was an afterthought, even when it was first worn well over 100 years ago.

Regarding the pole you created, I voted "no" because I simply think it would look horrible, nothing more.

Your "thought" of it possibly looking bad trumps the idea of giving it a chance and actually seeing it?

I don't know why everyone believes an orange and grey checkerboard end zone is "taking it too far". It would be simple and it would look cool. Also, I think if we added the swoosh then it would be cool. Anyways, I vote for it when we wear the grey uniforms.

I agree with this.
One game a year only. Designated "gray game".
Fans also encouraged to wear gray for this game only.

The "why" is probably not important. The people on Volnation have shown they do not like it with a 76 percent NO.
