Doubtful that we dedicate a single Corner to a receiver. They will be running the hurry up so, that almost prevents that from happening. (Don't want confusion in cover packages) Also, I am confident in our DBs for this game. I expect to see two true freshman starting at Corner.

I hate to say it but our inexperience at corner is what will kill us in this game imo. I think they’ll be great players I just don’t see them doing well against this caliber of a receiving core

The thing about CB's is there's not a lot of learning to the position. You don't have to call the DB sets like safties, you don't have to come up in run support (at least very little) so you're not reading anyone to know if you're playing run or pass (like SS or LBs), so there's not much to figuring out what your responsibility is - you have the no. 1 receiver on your side of the field - basically every play. There is some technique to learn but for these athletes its pretty instinctual. In what we expect CJP to run on D the basic technique is keep leverage on your receiver. You always have help to the inside and you have the boundary to the outside so just stay leveraged relative to one or the other. Basically the CB assignment goes like this. There's an imaginary line that runs vertically down the field (there are actually 2 one for the opposite side CB). Where the line is depends on where the ball is spotted but if spotted in the center of the field the line would be about 5-7 yards inside the hash. If your man lines up outside this line you stay on his inside shoulder and try to "influence him" (it's like "rubbing" in racing) towards the boundry and you can't let him back inside you so you stay low on his inside shoulder and in his grill AMAP. If the receiver lines up inside the line you play leveraged to his outside shoulder and influence the route to the inside where you have safety help and you can't let him get back outside of you. There is some technique involved in playing bump and run and you have to learn to run with the receiver and read him and only turn and look for and make a play on the ball when you see him moving to make a catch. That's pretty much it. The rest is just God given abiility which boils down to size, speed and having swivel hips. So can a Freshman play CB at a high level? CB and RB are the two easiest positions to come in and play IF you have the talent to play. So can AT get it done? We'll see but there's a pretty dang good chance he can. GBO

i'm very high on AT, and i think he's going to be very good for us. i expect he'll flash at times Saturday, but overall, you'd have to give the advantage in that match up to the experienced AA WR. i mean, c'mon. if roles were reversed, we'd be salivating at the prospects of that kind of match up, with that kind of QB delivering the ball. Taylor athletically can probably hold his own w/anyone on the field, but he'll make mistakes. he doesn't know what he doesn't know at this point in his career...game 1, year 1.

It would only work well if it freed up someone to go hard for the QB every play, and pop him in the mouth so quick he's scared to wait for Sills to beat Taylor.

I think Taylor has a good chance to become an All-American type player before he leaves Tennessee, but he's a freshman with very little experience at corner. Expecting him to play like an All-American this year is unrealistic, IMO.

I want to see a lot of pre snap communication between our DB's and LB's. I want to see our coaches coaching them when they are on the sideline. Recognize and execute should be the theme for our Defence. Go Vols!

Florida's defense beat us a lot of years with freshman starting at corner. Toast Tabor was one as I recall.

I agree. But let's amp that up to fierce and relentless pressure. Additionally. If our safeties are the nabbers of those INTs, then that would mean both of our corners are locking down their wide-outs and our DLs and LBs are smothering Grier. Doubtful if we can accomplish all three of those facets most of the time...but...if even on a few of those long tosses all of our guys are in this perfect storm of a defense, I think Grier will be done. GBO!

So these comments made me feel better about the situation.. Pruitt is gonna play the best player.. So he has confidence in Alontae it seems.. I don't expect the old sit back and wait D of the past.. Pruitt will attack and press.. Gonna be interesting...

No. True freshman just learning the position, giving up 4 inches to an All-American WR? Absolutely not.

More concerned about our poor Defensive line. Next comes our inexperienced corners. Feel pretty good about LB and safety.

I hope you are correct. I would love to shut down their passing game and make them try to run. Oh wait our rush defense last year was worse than our pass defense. Truth is I have no idea what to expect for tomorrow. I can dream, I can wish, I can make 'educated" guesses but the game will be played on the field.

Alontae has gone up against 3-4 better receivers in practice. Sills is a tough matchup, but not because he is athletically superior, but because he knows the system and plays smart.

I doubt they have Taylor following Sills around one on one all day. He is a freshman so they'll do what they can and keep him on one side of the field for the year. Have him work his technique in practice on only one side, the staff will do what they can to keep it simple for him.

If we have a chance in hell someone on our squad is gonna have to go blast the hell out of Grier, Sills or Jennings and take one of them the F out.

Not really. IMHO, you put a nickel back on him. It is a better physical match for UT.
