Alontae Taylor entering the draft, skipping the bowl game

Can someone give a statistic showing absolute number of players and percentage of players that have sustained career ending injuries in a bowl game?
When a kid has the opportunity to have generational changing money, no probability matters. When it happens to them it's 100% and they just became another statistic. To your point though, I bet it's pretty low; but the odds of him doing best for him and his is pretty high by making it to draft day fully intact

My stance on the “give all” part is truly my stance.

The rest was honest boredom and hilarity that posters would actually be ok with players ditching a bowl game.

To be more specific, it is pathetic to think this is acceptable. If 15 other players felt this way and did the same it would probably cause a forfeit. This may be acceptable to you but it’s not.

So to be clear my stance is not trolling.
I'm just in this for the boredom and hilarity.

You're WAY less committed to your argument than you insist players should be.

You're a troll. By definition. Someone not committed just trying to get a rise.

Go away.

Again context is your friend and taking my sentence completely out of it is disingenuous.

I don’t agree with that statement when you back out of supporting Tennessee and his teammates in a bowl game but I wish him well.
Must not of read the part where he said he has battled an injury for over 2 weeks just to finish out the season….. and needs this time to get ready for the senior bowl and the draft.

So let me get this right. One of the players that was a key member of our defense stayed with the team and had a big part of the better than expected year. According to a part of this fanbase, this LOYAL VFL is supposed to play in a meaningless bowl game (relatively speaking) with a nagging injury just to prove his loyalty to the team? So, if he plays in this game and that nagging injury becomes serious, does that somehow make him more loyal. Is he less if a VFL? He didn't desert this team before the season like so many others, and he didn't pull up lame and quit on the team in the middle of the year. This group of "fans" will never cease to amaze me.

The entitlement some of you feel about a kid making the best decision for his future is disgusting.
No entitlement. Just some are bought in by this new model of skipping bowl games. If it was about him he should of played golf.

If your team is playing in a December bowl game that potentially kicks off before noon or has mid afternoon kick I totally understand not playing in the bowl if you are worried about your NFL future. I’d love to see Alontae out there as much as the next fan, but we’re in a new reality now.

Outside of the playoffs bowls are meaningless so I don’t blame any players that are projected draft picks from skipping them.

This comment is spot on. This is not the game we once knew. Just like the NFL changed how fans viewed their teams when free agency came, we're now in a world where CFB players have the freedom to move just like coaches and they're gonna be paid sooner rather than later. Teams will be built on what they are willing to pay players. Teams with the money to give to the players will rule and there's no doubt in my mind, the same names will be near and at the top of the heap. Schools will just have to redistribute the wealth and include the players. CFB will now truly be an NFL minor league.

It's hard to describe, but the "attachment" to the players and coahes just seems different when you view them in the light of free agency. Speaking just for myself, but I no longer live and die with each recruiting class, each game, each win/loss, each season. Now it's something akin to a diversion/TV series that I catch if I have the time. If not, I'll record and watch later....maybe. It's still nice to win, but it's not a focus like it once was. Alonte made his decision and in a nutshell, it defines this "new reality" you mentioned. Just not the same game anymore.

Normally, I'd be in your corner OVM, but if you come from a poor Black background and all the disadvantages that comes with that, you grab the few and rare opportunities that come your way. If he plays, gets hurt and becomes undraftable, will you provide Altonae income for the rest of his life? No you won't, and a "Thank you for your service" won't feed, house, and clothe him or his family. You, however, as we all, will turn to cheer the next team we field and shortly forget about him. That would apply to any player no matter his ethnic. If he played unselfishly and got hurt, how unselfish would you be toward him after? No, this is not a put down of you OVM, what I say applies to all of us, no matter who we are. In fact, there was a time I had your mindset and spoke loudly about it. Then, well, let's just say, I got an up close, real close look at what happened to some players. One of which was actually living under an overpass bridge at one point, and nobody gave a damn.

I hate his not playing in the bowl. It reduces our chances of winning in my view. But knowing why he's doing it and what the consequences for him if he played and it backfires, I humbly dismount from my high horse and wish him good luck at the next level. And again, I emphasize what I say applies to all of us. Don't forget that most of our guys who hit it big, they often give back to the university in some way or another.

You really summed it up well here in the second paragraph. I totally agree that the attachment was somewhat severed by it all. It’s just a different era.

And so the world goes. It’s always changing..and always will.

'If he plays, gets hurt and becomes undraftable, will you provide Altonae income for the rest of his life?" Or he plays and has a monster game and improves his draft position as he's around #11-12 DB in the draft rankings. Works both ways. Everyone looks to play the what it game on injury as that is a valid reason to walk away, if that was the case... why play vs. TN Tech, Vanderbilt ,Bowling Green, South Alabama.

Let's see. Tae knows his injuries; we don't. He's played through them to finish the season.

He's skipping the UT bowl game.

He's going to the Senior Bowl over a month (of recovery time) later. This can have a big effect on his paycheck (think job interview/resume), which can also affect his family. His playing time likely will be more limited than a UT bowl game, entailing less risk of pre-contract injury.

Judgers gonna judge.

I will not engage you in argument because in my experience, the privileged and pompous cannot see beyond their own noses. The world beyond that is a mystery to them by preference. Over and out.

I heard that, but still, he is quitting UT football so he can play in the Senior Bowl. I don't want to argue a moot point, but it is what it is.

On the surface, it looks like that but the Bowl game we play in will have interest from us & our opponent. He would have probably played with or without nagging injuries if we were in the 12 team playoff, with more NFL eyes on them (future) games. That's why the current Bowl system is archaic. To borrow a slogan from SEC on making the playoffs "it just means more" He is a very intelligent solid player and think he will get drafted and help build up VFL and our NFL guys. Also, this Bowl game is more for extra practice time for next year's DB's and other players.

AT has years of tape for dozens of games at UT. One more won't make him any more money but it could absolutely lose some. He's graduating and has fulfilled his commitment yet some still demand more.

Cool, Go Vols!

Wasn't an argument, just the other view of wisdom to understand wisdom.

I don't question him for not wanting to play in a bowl game. Why risk major injury that could derail his career? His draft placement won't suffer.

I think some of these people are just mad they don't have another chance for free cookies. Good luck to him, and ball out at the Sr Bowl.

No one can say he hasn’t given his all for Tennessee. I wish him nothing but the best. Go get that money, Taylor, you deserve it! #VFL
