All time offense

Completely absurd ! Tony Robinson was an excellent QB, as talented as almost anyone to have played the position here. Kid had the arm to make any throw and the legs to scramble and get out of trouble. Robinson threw the deep better than anyone else to play here hands down.
The discussion was great Qb’s and maturity. Robinson may have been a great Qb but the maturity level got in the way. He had a one game NFL career which was a scrub game vs. the Cowboys in the 1987 strike year. Not the mark of a great Qb.

Check my posts. I stated not a great Qb which is an accurate statement.

Not even close to accurate, the kid was great here at TN (which was the whole point of the thread ala all time TN offensive players) before his knee injury, whatever happened in his career after TN is completely irrelevant to the point.

Good but not great. How many games did he actually start. Senior season cut short.

You are certainly entitled to your opinion no matter how incredibly wrong it may be. Johnny Majors called him a great player, Bear Bryant called him a great player, Pat Dye called him a great player, I watched him live with my own two eyes and saw that he was a great player, but by all means carry on with your argument, you almost have the majority of us believing you are a better judge than Johnny or The Bear.

I just check his stats and they are not great. Only 8-7 TD/Int before his injury his senior season. Probably a great athlete , but great Qb ? A resounding No! Just as valid as your opinion.

Didn’t Bear Bryant die after the ‘82 season? I thought he was gone before Robinson played at UT. He may have been on the team, but Cockrell or Alatore would’ve been the last to QB against Bryant. I may be jumping in without proper context.

Yes, the Bear died in 83'. I was referring to his quote about Robinson when he was recruiting him out of Florida to Alabama. Bear didn't make it long after his retirement in 82', somehow you just knew he wouldn't last very long after football coaching was gone.

Wasn’t that game what they based the movie “Replacements” from ?

Cockrell was TN QB for The Bears last game against TN. Bear tried to his best to get Robinson to Bama, he was only the second person of color ever offered a scholarship to play QB at Bama, Walter Lewis was the first and only other one.

Got it. I didn’t think about that angle. I was just a pup in those days.

Webb was the best TB to ever don the Orange jersey IMO. Had he played a few years later when ACLs could be repaired he would likely have been a HOFer at the next level.
He was great but Lewis was a generational talent. He is the only guy in on our top 10 rushing list with under 500 carries. Lewis basically ended up 5th alltime on our rushing list in 2 and 1/4 seasons. Henry is the alltime leading rusher in school history. That guy was a monster. We have had a ton of great backs but its hard for me to put anyone ahead of those 2.

Again, MO, but both those guys played on teams oozing with talent. Of those 2 Lewis was rasily a better back all around. However,

Chuck was unequaled as an all around back. No way to prove it but had he not been injured as a sophomore he would own the record books...playing on teams that were not as talented as Lewis and Henry were afforded.

Something to consider with Webb...Webb is held in such great regard even though his entire career was limited to 265 carries. That would only be good for #5 on UT's list for carries in a season. When you include his bowl stats for '89 (they didn't do that then which is taken for granted these days) Webb had 1485y on 235c (6.3ypc) and 14td's. He did this while not starting for the first five games due to splitting time with Cobb and sitting out the Vandy game entirely. He has the top two yardage games in TN history. (294 & 250)

When you look through threads like this and see how venerated Webb is and realize he made such an impression in such a short time before being injured it should tell you just how good that guy was.

No one is disputing anything he did but i cant disregard what Jamal Lewis did. Lewis got all of his accomplishments in basically 2 years, while competing with a guy that ending up being the school alltime rushing champ, and another guy who has the single season rushing record. Jamal Lewis went top 5 in the draft bc he was the best RB in the country not just UT. Its almost like comparing " what could have been" to " what was". In my book if u are 1 of the 7 guys in our school's history to be drafted in the top 5 of the NFL draft u are a vol 🐐. That tells us they were not just UT's best but they were the best in the country at their position

LOL! Hold up there hoss...there is nothing you need to explain to me (or most anyone on here) regarding how good Lewis was. I was just pointing out how bringing "all time" cumulative records to the conversation by default rather diminishes Webb through no fault of his own. I guess what I'm saying is that (and again, note how many people list Webb as their top UT back in these threads) Webb was every bit as generational a talent as Lewis (many would argue even moreso) but had even less opportunity than Jamal did. As an analogy Gale Sayers isn't in the top 140 in NFL career rushing due to injury yet became the youngest player inducted into the HOF. That's Webb to us.

It's frustrating as hell to think we had both but injury robbed us from what might have otherwise been legendary careers, like rushing titles and Heisman consideration.
