All things STOCKS

I go all the time. My wife loves it. The store itself hasn't seemed to have changed it all. There's always been a ton of stuff, some of it a little nicer and upmarket than WMT. That's why I couldn't figure out why they've been struggling.

I get COST eating some of their lunch, especially for stuff like groceries and food. I never shop at WMT, so if their stores are better than they used to be I had no idea.
A friend's recently divorced, ex military son calls it "A Target rich environment," so there's that.

I'm spared going in often but my wife enjoys it and is just happier after shopping there than Walmart. It's the little things.

Those who follow the company closely...what is going on with TGT?

Poorly run and in desperate need of new leadership.

Their merchandising/supply chain teams are awful and getting destroyed by WMT.

Cornell is a liar and Wall St no longer gives them the benefit of the doubt

Target's grocery is atrocious. So far, they've reduced or exited in many markets.

Target acquires products at higher cost than WMT, gets less vendor funding than WMT, gets it to their DCs slower than WMT, gets it to their DCs at higher cost than WMT, ships it to their stores slower than WMT, and costs more to ship to store than WMT...

And when gross margin misses, they blame "theft"

Target always seemed to me to be selling the same crap that the dollar stores sell but they spend more promoting it. The mindless consumers even started calling them Tar-zhe.

Have all of those things just started occurring in the last 2-3 years though? The stock was a great performer (and way outperformed WMT) for years until just the last couple of years.

I've thought for a long time (as has my wife, who otherwise loves the store) that their grocery was bad. She will occasionally buy one-off grocery items there if she's already in the store for something else, but we don't do our regular grocery shopping there. They've always been more expensive than WMT, but their product offerings were at least perceived to be higher-quality.

I would say they benefitted from a really strong economy in the 2010s and strong marketing which hid these operational flaws.

They've alienated their customers and COVID exposed the operational flaws.

I think Cornell is a major issue there

This will get big eye rolls here, but the backlash from them rolling back their DEI policies hurt as well. They actually experienced declines in foot traffic for 11 straight weeks after than announcement (https://www.cnbc.com/2025/05/07/why...e-picking-costco-and-walmart-over-target.html). Their clientele skews more towards women, and higher income women, than lots of other big box retailers, who were more likely to be offended by that.

Yeah, they somehow messed up on the PR with that news.

The government made a big deal of it. A few companies announced this and that.

Somehow it became a HEADLINE when Target made the move. Kinda boneheaded fumbling bumbling management or such.

I rarely go to either, but Wal-Mart (even the one in Turkey Creek) is a disorganized mess. I've never bought groceries in either. Target is fine for random household stuff, toys, gifts, etc.

I've read that some TGT shoppers have had to move to WMT, $$$
Eh, white suburban moms aren't fleeing Target anytime soon. Walmart still has that low class perception to it by most Americans and for good reason.

We have a Walmart+ account for the sole reason of never having to step foot into Walmart. We have probably gone inside Walmart less than 7 times in the last year and half of those times were on vacation.

Yeah, I go about once every 2-3 years. But then neither store really has things I want.
Groceries: Publix, Kroger
Clothing: Outlet stores( Levi, Brooks Bros. other) , online

Target: If CVS weren't in Target I wouldn't ever go there.

OTOH, anyone who feels the pinch of inflation might need to give Walmart a try.

The discussion is about Target Stock. There is a problem, and there has been for some time.

Theft is a problem at Target. I formerly worked with a guy who worked at Target as a part time 2nd job. He said if someone carried a TV out the door without paying they weren't allowed to approach them. I don't know. Maybe other stores have that same policy.
Also, that was about 8-10 years ago so that policy might have changed.

I think that is the policy for most stores.

They probably should close down stores in low income neighborhoods. I get that sounds classist and even a bit racist, but the facts are the facts. Crime is rampant in low income areas and keeping your store open for virtuous reasons is simply a failing business strategy.

Shrink is a sign of bad management. All retailers experience shrink. Well run ones manage through and mitigate it. Others dont....

You dont hear about Costco, Home Depot, etc with major shrink issues. Its because they are well run....

Lowes sells the same crap as Home Depot and in similar locations. Why is their shrink significantly worse? It's because they are from top to bottom run much worse than HD.

CLF has dropped to around $6. Might as well throw good money after bad, and buy some more. Wait for those tariffs to kick in or at least current orders expire.
By far my worst stock.

Walmart + is a big plus simply because you don't have to go in the store. lol

I’m watching AXL. Strong bounce off of their low that was hit just before the Trump Tariff Crash.

25x, 10x forward. 99.5% institutional ownership is strange.
