All of a sudden, I love Steve Spurrier!

This quote summarizes the general affection with UT for people across the country.

But Alabama, I think a lot of people in the SEC and the south have said hey, they’ve won enough. Let’s get some other people with a chance to win some championships.

Fans of all teams want to believe that with the right couple of playmakers and schemes that you can slay the Goliaths that have dominated recruiting.

I think Spurrier wanted to come to the UT. But the coach at the time (Bowen?) insisted on running what Steve considered an outdated single wing offense. Then the coach sort of insulting him by saying, "Change the offense for just one player? NO!" So Steve went further south, and the rest is history. The UT coach of the time was not unlike a pre-Pruitt, Pruitt in terms of being stubborn and more than a bit egocentric.
Yes. And it was Bowden Wyatt who faced his own issues in his short tenure. Spurrier was quite the big deal. Local TV played replays of Science Hill games. I don't think the money men carried the type of influence they do today.

Steve would have played for the Vols but did not because of the Single-Wing offense.

I'm sure Steve will be listening to the game between Science Hill (Johnson City) and Dobyns-Bennett (Kingsport) Friday at 7PM.

Not to offend any D-B fans, but since my dad played for Science Hill in the early 40s, Go Toppers!!

Funny/Cool Steve Spurrier story - it was spring of 1996 and I had flown to Delaware for work from Louisville.
Flight there was direct, but the flight home went from Delaware to Cincy to Louisville.
During the short layover in Cincy to change planes I was walking down the concourse, glanced over to the guy walking next to me and it was Coach Spurrier.
I got to my gate, Spurrier sat down a couple of seats away...of course I was rocking out my bright orange UT hat.
Coach looks over at me and says "Nice hat". I responded with thanks and good luck this year.
Plane got called for boarding (small twin engine DC9 I believe as it was a short flight) and low and behold Coach and I were seated right next to each other.

We spent the next hour talking college ball in general, nothing specific about UT or Florida.
I realized then that Coach was more than just a Florida Gator - he was a fan of the sport itself.
It was later that I realized he was likely visiting Louisville to recruit Jeff Brohm.

He's got land in Johnson City. Fulmers gone. He repented of his sins and transgressions. GBO 🍊

While he did throw a lot of shade our way, from a non-partisan point of view he has been good for college football. Mixed feelings now, like watching your MIL drive off a cliff in your brand new Porsche.
