All-Joe team: favorite Vol fullbacks?

I think you have your years confused. Amsler definitely played in a Sugar Bowl game--only not the one against Miami in 1985 / 86. Greg played against Virginia in the 1990 / 91 Sugar Bowl.

One of my favorite UT players of all time. I swear I remember him even throwing a halfback pass once or twice. Gritty player, good blocker, underrated runner and receiver.

This is correct. Amsler's best run of the year was that game. He had a Moreno-esque leap over a UVA defender and kept on running. He and Will Bartholomew are probably the two best pure fullbacks in the last 25 years. Bryson, Phillips and Fleming were probably better all around, but they couldn't block or catch flare passes nearly as well.

Shawn Bryson for the big run against Florida.
He out ran all of them.

Shawn Bryson was very fast. I remember him breaking up the middle several time and run past the db for the score. He could seperate from the defensive backs. I think he was about 240 lb with 4.4 speed in the 40.

Bryson had the 2nd fastest 40 on the team in 98.

There is absolutely no question Bryson was the best UT fullback ever. He could have played TB. He was huge and he could run like a horse.

Mose Phillips is probably a distant #2. Nobody else is really even close to these 2 guys.

One of the first games I ever attended they handed it off to William Howard something like 13 plays in a row when they were trying to ice the game.

I'll also mention Sam "The Ram" Henderson and Roc Powe just because I like to say their names.

You are right, I had my years mixed up. I was at both games, that was the VA game. Anyways even though I have so many great vol memories they are all starting to run together.
