All I ask do not blame kicker

Banks had a VERY bad game calling plays and formations. Wait til the film guy grinds this tape. I played ball thru HS and know that Banks failed miserably adjusting to what Bobo was doing on offense. Only having 7 men in the box when UGA has their jumbo package in there is inexcusable. No excuse. Any defensive coach knows we arent stopping 8 BLOCKERS AND A RB with only 7 men in the box. Its a simple numbers game at that point. No excuse. Bobo drove all the way down the field with 13 running plays and we were still in Nickel defense with 7 men in the box. So stupid. I love Banks. He is a very good coach. He had a very bad today again vs UGA.
The Vols are very thin and undersized and inexperienced on the dline, especially interior dline. It showed against Syracuse and since then I've been discussing this and how the good/great teams will exploit this major weakness. It's a really bad problem and there is no answer. Not sure how they are in the situation especially with the portal.

You got one job as a kicker. You’re a college kicker, you got to make that kick. The moment was too big for him and it was a choke job. That said, plenty of blame to go around. We should have went for the throat after the turnover. Three straight runs is inexcusable. Slowing the game down in the 2nd quarter when we had Georgia on their heels, also questionable.

You have to make that kick. If he did his job, we're all talking about a great victory. Hopefully he can get redemption in the future.

Several well detailed responses here already so I’m not inclined to add another. The simple fact is that there were a number of scenarios throughout the game where had things gone differently, we didn’t lose this game. Missing that field goal was just one of them. In each case we can pick out an individual who failed to “ do their job” and had they NOT failed, we wouldn’t have needed Gilbert’s kick. I’m definitely not “ hating on anyone “ here including Gilbert, but yeah… at that moment, in the scenario CREATED BY THOSE OTHER FAILURES…he failed. Like all of us, I’m VERY disappointed. I really believed we FINALLY had a realistic opportunity to break the long chain of losses to Georgia. Ah well… there’s still a lot of football to be played and I’m putting this loss on the shelf.
GO BIG ORANGE..!!!

I had full confidence the young man would make the kick but it's not the first time a kicker has missed a game winning FG and it won't be the last.

That BVS disease have ate some of you guys up...

Max Gilbert has to hit that field goal. Hitting field goals in crucial moments is part of his job. Yesterday Max Gilbert failed to do his job.

This game should have been over prior to that .
This game lies solely on the giving up the TD on 4th and 6 and the subsequent two point conversion.

which while not great, is because we are down 4 defensive starters (2 cornerbacks)

McCoy makes the play on the 4th down and keeps that WR from scoring and game is over

Why was ABC allowed to put a camera 3 inches from Max's face? Where are his coaches and teammates to tell the camera crew to piss off?

Agree with most here. Also Max has been pretty consistent but you could tell he was nervous. Any poster here who thinks they could go out and nail a 40 plus yard FG at an angle in front of 102k screaming fans and millions more at home watching without shaking is a liar

The head coach left him on the sidelines thinking about it, instead of just running him out there. But no, let’s run 2 or 3 meaningless plays. Yeah he missed the kick. But that’s as much on the coach as the kicker.
The head coach ran out the clock so that Georgia didn’t have time to score in the event of a miss. For you new UT fans: See 2016 TN vs Georgia.

Kickers.................Hero or Zero
No in between here....................he choked.
As the Coach did for not continuing down the field and win the game.
BS on running the clock down leading to FG

Heupel was the goat. That 5 yards moving it into over 40 yard range is a mind Fk to a Kicker
He was off on the sideline before the penalty. Looked absolutely rattled. Announcers said as much. I’m sure that penalty shifted him into overdrive though on the nerves. Mental aspect is huge and in this conference you have to be able to depend on your kicker; max will get through it.

I had zero doubt that Gilbert was nailing the game winner

He nailed the 48 yarder in OT, but missed the one that mattered. I just don’t understand why Heupel threw Gilbert out there right after we lost 5 yards. That only increased the pressure. Why not try to get a little back on 3rd down?
Because if you make a mistake, it’s 5 more yards back. I thought he should have kicked it on the play we jumped offside.
