UT retains all coaches

Going to paraphrase in case it's behind a paywall for some of you.

We look to be poised to be the only school in the SEC to retain the entire coaching staff. That is huge and speaks volumes for continuity and what they think about CJH and the direction he's headed. I know some probably interviewed for other positions, but bringing them all back could pay dividends. The article also lays out the salaries for the staff. 4 staff members get a raise in 2022.

Wide receivers coach Kodi Burns - annual base salary of $290,000. Supplement increases from $10,000 last year to $135,000 in his new contract year. Total 2022 - $425k - 1 more year left on contract.

Defensive coordinator Tim Banks - annual base salary of $290,000. Supplement increases $100,000 — from $1.01 million to $1.11 million. Total 2022 - $1.4mil - 2 years left on deal.

Defensive line coach Rodney Garner - annual base salary is $290,000. Supplement increases $75,000 — from $260,000 to $335,000. Total 2022 - $625k - 1 more year left on contract.

Secondary coach Willie Martinez - annual base salary of $290,000. Supplement increases from $135,000 to $160,000. Total 2022 - $450k - 1 more year left on contract.

Garner and Burns also have retention bonuses in their contracts. If Burns is still employed at the end of the 2022 regular season, he’ll get $125,000. If Garner is still employed on Feb. 15, 2023, he’ll get $150,000. Both would still receive those bonuses if they were fired without cause.

The rest are staying at their 2021 rate.

Offensive coordinator/tight ends coach Alex Golesh - annual base salary of $290,000. $460,000 annual supplement. Total 2022 - $750k - 2 years remaining on contract.

Offensive line coach Glen Elarbee - annual base salary of $290,000. $460,000 annual supplement. Total 2022 - $750k - 1 more year left on contract.

Quarterbacks coach Joey Halzle - annual base salary of $290,000. $60,000 annual supplement. Total 2022 - $350k - 1 more year left on contract.

Running backs coach Jerry Mack - annual base salary of $290,000. $110,000 annual supplement. Total 2022 - $400k - 1 more year left on contract.

Linebackers coach Brian Jean-Mary - annual base salary of $290,000. $260,000 annual supplement. Total 2022 - $550k - 1 more year left on contract.

Special teams coordinator/outside linebackers coach Mike Ekeler - annual base salary of $290,000. $60,000 annual supplement. Total 2022 - $350k - 1 more year left on contract.

I should add that the contract year starts tomorrow (Feb 1), so being a UT fan, I expect crap to hit the fan in the next 10 hours.

Glad to see they are keeping this group together. I am mostly positive about the staff, but regardless, I think it takes more than a single year to know for certain what you’ve got.

The turnover with the previous staff should have been a warning that something was not right.

I agree. With where the program stands right now? This stability is huge.

As to the previous staff? You know, assistant coaches come and go. If they get a better offer somewhere else, it's not the end of the world. Happens to most programs. As long as you can bring in someone new that improves the team? It should not cause some to lose their minds.

Chances are if Heupel succeeds? Coaches will get offers. Position coaches get coordinator jobs. Coordinators become head coaches. But for this year, and where they stand right now? This IS very good news.

If we're as successful as we hope in 2022, next Jan there will be some coaches get elevated opportunities elsewhere...but that's ultimately good b/c of positive momentum. 2 good years on tape will bring more coaches and recruits because they can see the positive path forward and culture being built.

Did any Defensive coach?

You know, we could banter that back and forth for the rest of our lives. And we probably will.

I look at it like this; These guys came into a train wreck. Players were leaving for other schools in high numbers, and we aren't talking third stringers here. These guys weren't passing out towels and water bottles to guys coming off the field. Many were starters. And many of these position coaches were having to hit the recruiting trail while their wives had to pack their suitcases in a short time for them to go out again.

So while some of you might worry about too many passes getting completed against the secondary, or some coverage mistakes or bad blitz packages? This team still exceeded expectations. Now, I am not a big fan of passing out raises after year one. That kinda wreckless money management has gotten way outta hand. But even if they are at the same pay for year two, the question should be "Are they on track with what they did this year to get a raise next year?" Well, that won't be up to any of us, that is on Danny White and Heupel. But IMO? Yes, if they cause their position group to improve? They will have earned consideration for a raise.

I'm very happy with the continuity, but you get a like for that last sentence all by itself!

That was my first thought too. He would be my first choice for an upgrade.

Our safeties and corners are very slow as a whole, and there seems to be at least one blown coverage assignment every 4 - 6 plays against a good passing team. First problem is players, and the second part may be 50-50 player-coach.

Have not had an elite DB since Eric Berry is pretty bad too

Martinez didnt deserve a raise
He put up a mid-SEC secondary and upgraded all stats over "secondary guru" Pruitt's unit from 2020.

He also did so without a nary of pass rush.

What more could you expect when we returned such a poor secondary? To finish middle of the SEC was quite an accomolishment in and of itself. He also put up pretty good units when he was here before. He's proven a solid coach.

Almost a full page.
Not one mention of recruiting.
The 2022 class does not warrant giving a raise to any coach.

People are harsh on our defense, but they were on the field roughly 40 minutes every game. We just don't currently have the depth to make a defense look good while being on the field that long. Hard to put that on the coaches. You gotta have talent, and this year, we lacked a lot of it on defense.

If you noticed, we tended play pretty good defense in the 1st quarter, then we'd nearly always get lit up in the 2nd quarter. Then after a break at halftime, we would play better for a bit in the 3rd before getting lit up again the 4th quarter. Seems like every game but Kentucky and Ole Miss went that way.
