All but an announcement away from confirmation.

My thoughts here STL. Though I don't think he's that overrated.

His two offenses at UF sucked without Mullen.

You seem skeptical but admit that recruiting is 50%. I'm a little let down about the hire too but here's how I look at it.

1 Assuming you manage to keep LT you just netted back what you lost in recruiting.

2. Most of why we lost last year and the year before and the year before was not about the play calling it was about depth. So for us that makes number one count twice.

3. He's an SEC guy in a new role. Meaning he's got something new to prove before he can field new and better offers. Meaning we aren't trying to hold the guy here like Wilcox, which is good for stability and again recruiting. At least for a 2 year cycle.

4. DD is on a 1+1 that means keep the class and do enough not to lose to KY and Vandy next year and eek a bowl game so you can try again. Most of that is on Chaney because that side is who lost games this year, aside from D depth which again takes us back to 1.

My theory is if the O isn't better squat matters and we all want recruiters at that point anyway and having a NFL and NC guy on the trail doesn't hurt.

Yeap...this is why this is a good hire. Will make some sizzle being a D-coach from the only D that has a shut-out in a BCS Bowl.

Big big difference between his bowl trip and Steele's which in today's world matters probablly more to a recruit than how well they've administrated a defense.

Fine with the hire, but gosh I really don't want to lose Lance

Lance makes $400K. According to reports on TOS, he is quite happy in Knoxville. And, Hubbs doesn't think he will look around.

Guess is that LT was consulted before serious discussions were held with Sunseri.

1. Agree

2. Agree

3. Completely disagree. This was not the year to have a guy with "something to prove" in that sense. Does Dooley need to think long term? Yes. He also has to win in 2012. Does Sunseri help us become a championship type program in 2012 with his coordinating ability? I don't think so.

4. He has to win at minimum eight games next year. Most likely nine IMO. If all he has planned for next year is that, then I will help him pack the UHaul van tomorrow.

Dooley needs to win at least eight or nine games next season or he will be shown the door. It's time for Dooley to stop with the excuses, the Vols will return a talented group of players on both sides of the ball who have the experience to win in the SEC. Now Dooley must show he can coach them up. Go Vols.

Here's my thing: let's say Kirby Smart gets a HC job next year, does Sunseri then go back to Bama?

I'm saying for a team like UT recruiting is what gets us to winning next year and not much else. Everyone gave Wilcox hell for his schemes in his year 1. Those that defended it said it was lack of guys.
Yes you need a decent plan defensively but look what WVU did to Steele and he's got experience.

Secondly I'm sure DD intends to win them all but realistically if he beats all the teams ranked below him, which is what he was doing until the KY debacle he's going to get another. I don't like that but, God forbid, if we lose Bray and Hunter to injury again next year that would be the reality.

I agree but that basically entails beating teams ranked below us. FL, GA, or SC has to fall. He won't get fired if he can't beat all 3 though.

Private flights out of or into Knoxville the last 5 days. Tuscaloosa alabama, Miami Florida, Champagne Illinois, and Athens Georgia. None from Ruston Louisiana, or Clemson South Carolina. I looked all this stuff up my self. The last one was from Athens, and that was tonight.............Seems like Steele, and Spangler were really never in the mix. It seems like most of the rumors had legs. The Athens flight probably had nothin to do with anything, maybe none of them did......just some true info I looked up myself.

Recruiting is big for Tennessee I agree. YOu also have to get a guy who can coach defense at the coordinator position.

We agree I'm simply saying if Chaney doesn't step up it wouldn't matter who it was. If Chaney does step up and Bray Hunter stay healthy then the guy could be 2011 Steele good prebowl game and we'd keep DD. Clemson's O won not Steele's D.

We need to recruit a couple of the best RB's in the nation this year... and the offense will surprise a lot of folks. Strength during the off season is vital for the Oline. They've got to get stronger legs to run block... decent enough at pass blocking. I don't think Chaney is the problem, jmo.

This hiring decision is huge, though. Defense could be a problem.

I agree that Saban is key to Bamas success. But some of you guys act like all of his assistants just fill space, and just look good because of Saban. It's literally impossible for Saban or any head coach to be responsible for every X and O and how well every individual is trained.... Sal is knowledgeable

It doesn't matter the proof will be on the field. We know the talent is there so give him a chance but there is no room fir excuses

Dont want to get into an X's and O's argument, but if I have a 4 man front, I need 8 quality players to give me depth. In a 3 man front I need 6. They can be a combination of DT's and DE's. It all depends on the style of attack you want. Those front three have to own the LOS and give the LB;s free reign to run to the football. At least that is the way I have ran the thing in the past.

Hey, I'm no coach so I couldn't get into X's and O's if I wanted to. Seen a lot of conversations about the subject and that seems to be consensus. Your 6-8 argument makes good sense though, so I dunno.

would risk his job by having one of them MORE qualified than him,,see what im saying?

Yea, I see your argument. What I'm saying is that'd be dumb on his part. Say we got a Smart (just for example), how would Smart being here be a threat to Dooley's job? If Smart does well then most likely our team does well and Dooley's job security increases. Vice vers if Smart does bad, and if Smart does bad then he wouldn't be getting the nod for HC gig.

If Smart does well and Dooley gets canned then, yes, he may get the nod for the HC gig but that still has no effect on Dooley's job as it in this case it was other factors that result in Dooley's firing.

In no way would any hire ever be a threat to Dooley's job. They may benefit if Dooley doesn't succeed but nothing more.

can someone tell me what the hell is going on? ive missed the past 10 hours of madness that has occured. just a quick recap?
