All but an announcement away from confirmation.

His key is doing something different from the rest of the league and not sticking around long enough to let the DC's catch up. I think he's way overrated as well on the offensive mind side. Pretty solid administrator though.

I have to disagree there. I agree that is a little overrated as a coach, but he was at UF for 6 seasons. 5 of them were great. If it takes sec dc's 5 years to catch up then he must be something right. I have heard this apply to Malzahn more than anybody.

I just like everybody's extreme confidence they have in thier ability to identify the qualities necessary to be a successful DC. Coaches that coach with him every day at practice, bounce ideas around with him in coaches' meetings, listen to his ideas he generates from watching game tape, has talked with numerous other coaches that coached with and against him, and hears his input every week during the season when they install the game plan. Those are just a couple of reasons why DD (and the other HC's Thompson has coached under) might just have a better idea about who would make a better DC. But then again Billy Bob in Bucksnort says we would be better off promoting Thomspon.

Not to mention how much better we get at position coaches if we have SS and LT coaching DL and LB. That is great combo.

May I say something?

That 09 offense wasn't very good.

Heck, you want 10 men you can rotate in and out, but at the bare minimum in a 3-4 scheme you need 6. But the more the better. My point is that it is not a far fetched idea that we go to the 3-4. On the other hand, UT has in the past been a 4-3 team defensively. We were a very good 4-3 team and can be again, but it all goes back to having the quality Jims and Joes to run the show.

In the 3-4, you are using what would be considered 3 DTs and 2 DEs in a 4-3. It is basically a 5-2 front with the 2 DEs standing up instead of a 3 point stance. For example, players like Jacques Smith and Willie Bohannon would likely become OLBs if we move full time to the 3-4.

In reality, we would need 10 linemen at the bare minimum and would like to have more if we want to go deeper than 2 players per position.

My thoughts here STL. Though I don't think he's that overrated.

His two offenses at UF sucked without Mullen.

Its a fair argument, he has to have the right quarterback to run his system. He had Alex Smith, Chris Leak, and Tebow to run his good ones and when he didnt have the qb, he backfired badly.

Also, I know he interviewed for the Panthers job. Was he actually considered a legit candidate? I'm being serious, I was wondering if anybody had a link for that.

It's the Rooney Rule, requires NFL teams to interview minority candidates for head coaching jobs.

He could be a good hire NS does not have ppl on his staff if they are not good at a position and we just need to fill those positions with some good coaches that work together and willing to stay for several years

The biggest reason Im happy is because we will more than likely keep our great defensive commits. I dont see Santos, Peters, or Obrien decommiting with a guy with a track record like his on our staff.

I understand. I'm happy that we will keep those commits most likely. I'm also nervous because the time to win is now, and this seems like a move that would have made Janaury/February 2010.

Yeap...this is why this is a good hire. Will make some sizzle being a D-coach from the only D that has a shut-out in a BCS Bowl.

It wasn't near his 08 offense but it seemed pretty good to me. This is all opinion though.

Don't know if you had a chance at some point to play against a team who used an odd offensive set, but it's not just the coaches figuring it out, but also sorting out a way to coach stopping it. 5 years is a long time for an NFL team, but for college ball with much higher player turnover, I don't think that's all that slow.

I think Saban would have owned the guy. JMO.

Sunseri has been in Knoxville today per Govolsxtra. I believe CLT should be Co-DC, or least givin some $$$
We don't need to loose him. He's may be our best coach.
