my favorite is that he trashes the airlines for being "paramilitary" after 911 - umm, didn't TSA and DHS do that?

Does anyone actually know if cell phones being on can actually put the plane in jeopardy? Or, do they just tell you that so cell phones aren't going off the entire flight?

There is a claim that it can interfere with plane electronics. Hasn't been proven as far as I know. Doesn't seem to interfere with Euro or Asia plane operations. But, it is an FAA rule and not just airlines.

Its mainly because they want you to at least somewhat pay attention to the safety instructions and you are not staring at your phone during the most dangerous parts of the flight when something could go wrong

I guess I could see that. With all the security after 9/11 and such, I would think if they were any real danger, they'd be banned from planes. I mean, wouldn't all the terrorists have to do is turn their phones on mid flight? I think it's BS.

If it was really a danger, they would do a bit more than just make an announcement.

I turn off my ringer on planes, but that's it. I never bother with airplane mode or anything like that.

Yet another disconnect...problem/issue that is completely tied to govt oversight but blamed on corporations. Imagine that.
