Anybody else had problems with Alcohol flush syndrome, where you drink a bit and get a really red face? Apparently about 8% of the population has that gene where they don't process ethanol fully, and their body builds up toxins. Mostly folks of Asian (Native American?) descent. I wasn't bothered with this all these years when I just drank a beer or two, but lately been getting more into hard liquor and now this is happening. Associated with higher cancer risk ... scaring me back to being a one-beer guy or even just green tea. I would like a chance to know my grandkids some day. :ermm:

Yes. When I drink certain liquors, especially if mixed with triple sec or something. Can't drink more than one Margarita. I get splotchy and have trouble breathing. Usually calms down after about 30 minutes. Can be a little scary. First happened really badly at the sugar bowl against uva. Was drinking hurricanes and turned purple. Friends started trying to charge people to look at "The freak red boy". I just have to stay away from certain liquors.

Pl3, you better google this topic and see if you want to just push on until it calms down.

I'm good. Doesn't happen much anymore because I don't do fruity drinks much and know the liquor mixes that cause it. I even know when its coming. Just had a checkup. I'm 41 and in very good health, outside of cholesterol.

I know a guy from over in Greenfield, Tn with the red face syndrome. He'd have a beer or two and his big ol bald head would look like a tomato!! He'd call the "red man" lol

Sounds dangerous, I thought it was going to be something like, if you drink too many beers you get the ****s...

My wife is a veteran nurse who has been married to me for almost 29 yrs but she was shocked at how bright red my face was last night ... and one of the components that I was mixin was Sauza margarita mix which contained triple sec. Hmmm.

Take a pepcid ac or similar antacid before you drink and it should help. Seriously, 1st wife was Japanese and she had it, now my daughters do also, but they do the antacid first and are fine.

My old roommate and good friend has asian flushing syndrome. He is korean. No more than 2 beers and he turned beet red. He used to put em down pretty hard and never had a problem.

I bet if you add some SPF 15 to the drink it will combat this. Just a thought.

Are you saying, he didn't used to have a problem with it, but now he does?

Because that seems to be my case. The other day it hit me after just a small glass of red wine; it was never like that in all the years before.

I don't mind the aesthetics/inconvenience of it, but sites online say there could be significant long-term health risks associated with it.

I have had the same situation. I have drank beer for 12 years now, but it started happening to me only 3 years ago. Doesn't happen every single time, but I'd say its like 60/40 that my cheeks turn slightly red after about 2 or 3 beers. Keep drinking and it goes away. Also happens with wine. I thought it was perhaps my blood pressure and had a full check done, and everything was perfect. I have never heard of such a condition until this thread, which now makes me wonder.

some people of British descent can tend to have rosy cheeks. When you drink the blood vessels dilate a little bit. I think there is a difference between that and flush syndrome.
