Alabama textbook scandal widens

Almost as good as yours.

Shouldn't you be perming your mullet and laying coke bottles at the feet of the Bear's statue?

Very funny!!:lolabove: Sadly, I know someone that still does that. My take on the whole textbook thing:

Its very simple really. If a student athlete is guilty of making a little extra cash with the "extra" books, he is done. I don't care if its the back up goalie for the water polo team or the friggin starting center for the football team. These kids are HANDED a college education, all they have to do is play football, study,go to class and pass. Im so SICK AND TIRED of hearing about the poor student athlete because of how much money the university makes off of him and he gets nothing. HAVE ANY OF THESE NUMBSKULLS SAYING THIS PRICED A COLLEGE EDUCATION LATELY!!!! Give me a freaking break. To put your team and program in such a compromising position by trying to score a few extra bucks is absolutely disgusting and deserve nothing short of suspension for the rest of the season, AT THE VERY LEAST.
I just hope this doesn't cause the NCAA to send their pretty little love letter. It appears that Bama has done everything in its power to report, suspend, and investigate the issue. I just hope they follow it through.

while I disagree with the severity you say an athelete should be punished, I agree with the rest of it. I believe in my heart that ALMOST all kids on ALL teams have good hearts and don't mean to break the rules when they are broken. I don't want people to chant "death penalty" to Alabama and I don't want honest UT kids to cause the school they love to suffer either.

Isn't it better when the main topic of discussion is something like this: "man, that sure was another great game this year. I hope we get 'em again next year!" rather than "I hate those cheaters, they haven't known how to follow the rules since Caligula was emperor. 92,545 years of cheating is enough!"

Well, the good thing is this has nothing to do with cheating. This was just some EXTREMELY boneheaded decisions made by student athletes, not a bunch of adult coaches doing shady things trying to gain an advantage. The reason I feel that a severe punishment is warranted is that EVERY player on that team has to know what Bama (the team that they play for) just went through with the sanctions and they should not do anything that would cause the NCAA to look up. You never know with that group what they are going to do and who they are going to do it to. Just really dumb...:banghead2::furious3::realmad:

Quite possibly the single most intellectually inept post in the history of this forum.

true, can't argue with that

maybe he thinks that if some atheletes sell thier books then they are now "professional" players, cuz they got paid. Now the school forfiets all wins since the signing of the Magna Carta. Because everyone knows thats the rules, its in the Bible.:)

Who's fault is it that college education costs so much? in stead of being angry with the student athlete for wanting to make a couple of hundred bucks while the university rakes in MILLIONS from TV, licensing, bowl earnings, etc... why don't you ask some of these college administrators why they are wasting space and resources with half empty classrooms on subjects like Victorian Women's Studies, The Lyrics of Bob Dylan, or the Artwork of Ancient Tigris River Settlers? Why don't you ask college administrators why they seemingly have 8-10% tuition rate hikes when the averge inflation rate is only 3-4%?

Oh really, why is that?
You're blathering about how they get a free education. I'll bet OJ Mayo would be more than glad to take his rightful share of the revenue from all #32 USC hoops jerseys and pay his own tuition. Darren McFadden could send the three county area surrounding Fayetteville to school with the revenue he's generated. The idea that a scholarship is equivalent value to those guys services is laughable.

And the free education argument is even more flawed when you realize that the value of an education from one school to the next is even equitable. A punter on the Duke football team could probably get connections to just about any Fortune 500 Company he wanted just because of his Duke degree. If Darren McFadden blows out a knee and has to lean on his Arkansas degree, where will that get him besides a lifetime greeter job at the Pine Bluff Walmart?

You waste space everyday TVA.

Pithy... not sure what it has to do with the value of a college athlete's labor/craft... oh well. It's not like I expect to see a response on the level of Adam Smith or Ayn Rand whenever you post, but nice addition to the conversation anyways. :good!:

I cannot argue those facts and agree with the inconsistency, but rules are rules. Just because the NCAA, institutions, etc... are raking in millions from things the student athletes do on the field, does not give them the right to break the rules and put the program in jeopardy. You never know what the NCAA will do with seemingly insignificant infractions. If the student athlete does not want all the above mentioned organizations raking in the jack from them, then its simple...refuse the scholarship. I would venture to say that the difference between the value of these athletes scholarships and the money they actually generate for their institutions is much smaller than anyones salary versus what they are responsible for generating for their company.

I doubt that...

I guess here is my question... what is so morally or ethically wrong with an athlete receiving money? The idea os "amateurism" has been around for a little over 120 years or so I guess. The arguement was that athletes shouldn't get paid because the competition is more pure and acceptable if money isn't involved.

Would opinions of Al Wilson change if people found out he may have scored a few hundred bucks selling books? Would people then begin to question his effort on the field?

the whole notion of the amateur athlete needs to be addressed again.

My original point was the fact that these guys only thought of making a few bucks for themselves at the possible expense of their team. At the very least, their team lost their services for what was the biggest game of the year, to date. By the way, I think good ole D-Mac is getting his. Did you see his ride ESPN showed during the Alabama game??

Again, missing my point. I dont at all see anything wrong with it AS LONG AS IT IS NOT AGAINST THE RULES. For now, the NCAA kinda frowns on that kind of thing and considering Bama's past, I would like to think that the players would go out of their way to not jeopardize their team for their own selfish gain. I know, I need to get my head out of the sand and quit being naive.

Student athletes should have about as much loyalty to a school as the school has for them. scholarships are year to year. If an athlete isn't producing on the field, they can have their scholly ripped from them in a second.

It had nothing to do with the topic, I just found it ironic.

Well, whats wrong with that? What happens if you stop producing for your employer?

A brother can't drive a nice car? I don't care how he gets money for the ride. neither should you... and neither should the NCAA.

If somebody gives a normal student a $100 handshake, nothing is the matter with that. But for some reason, 100 years or so ago, people for whatever reason thought that just because you are an athlete, you shouldn't get a scholarship AND get money on the side also.

Nobody seems to come up with a reasonable answer for why.

We got off chasing rabit trails. My point is that I wished our players would just use their heads, thats all.
