'19 AL WR George Pickens (UGA signee)

I respectfully disagree with this, I understand the point and sentiment. This kid is tremendously talented at playing football, so much so that this skill has the ability to make him millions of dollars. This path would make his life better than any reading could do. There are people who have done nothing but study, earn doctorate degrees and wont earn in a lifetime what he could earn in a year. If he learns basic skills (which everyone should know), he would wind up being a lifetime low level employee, and these skills could be learned at anytime.

You could make the argument to separate sports from education completely and let him try to go straight to the pros. However, if giving the young man the best chance of a good life is the objective, let him get trained by high level coaches and go make his money playing professional football. Reading can wait in this case.
You must be young. No offense. Look at where MANY millionaire athletes are in life by their 40's. It's not directly analogous to just reading obviously but education, not simply "schooling" but rather real education is vitally important to actually capitalize on the $$$ contracts.

NCAA tightened eligibility requirements a few years ago. Players now have to have 10 of 16 required core courses locked in at the start of their SR year and 7 of the 10 have to be in English, math and science. So if they're not on track to qualify, it's harder to get their core GPA up enough in two semesters. As we saw with JJP, getting good grades in a few accredited online courses during the spring and summer isn't easy for some guys.

I dont have CTE, at least I hope not. But I would easily trade every dollar in my bank account to get rid of one of my two concussions. It's no joke, there is a reason you see a real high rate of suicide with head injuries. It does far more than make you "dumb"
I hope you don't have it either. That risk is a part of why athletes are paid so well. It is especially unfortunate when amateur athletes suffer them.

I agree, there are a lot of people that do a very poor job at managing their money. That is a skill that is not taught enough.

Education is important as is knowing basic skills. He has the right to choose to get an education. I don't personally know him, but looking at him from an outside perspective playing football has the most potential for changing his and his family's lives. The odds of him making millions per year as a wide receiver is more likely than making 6 figures in a "normal" job. I don't see how those potential earnings should be contingent on him getting skills that does not pertain to his ability to perform that job. And I am not at all saying that those skills are unimportant.

Risk is not why football players are paid well, it's the entertainment value. I guess you could argue that injuries are something that they know come with the sport, but there isn't a ton of long-term risk in other sports that pay well.

Yeah, it is supply and demand. There are not many athletes that can play at that level. Risk is only part of it. The riskier something is, there will be fewer people that will be willing to perform a task.

Football players get paid when they play. Not when they dont, unless for advertising.

I recall Baseball not being the 'cool' sports 10-15 years ago. Baseball was stagnant, still is. Though my god I loved playing...anyway. Seems a resurgence in talented players to Majors.

Money you can make in Majors is sick and have a really long career, and no CTE.

He said Chaney wasnt either.
Probably because he wasn’t until Georgia wouldn’t match what we offered, on top of that Pruitt isn’t going to make his friend coach friend shuffle to a different position group, you can take that to the bank

Didn’t get my post edited quick enough but Pruitt and Friend are pretty tight and I’d bet that trumps the Chaney-Pittman ties
Friend can still be on staff you know.

If Pruitt really cares about winning he'll have to make difficult decisions, I dont think Friend is horrible, but if you have the opportunity to hire a top 3 OL coach in the country you do it and move your friend Friend to TE.

Hopefully this helps with Pickens, to get the thread back on track.

Not saying i disagree with you bud but i’m just willing to bet that it isn’t going to happen

Depends on if we have anymore openings. Hopefully we would shift Friend to TEs, let Pittman have OL, and Neid to RB. Icing would be Tee coaching WR.
Will Friend is one of the best OL coaches in the biz, he's not moving to TEs. Not going to happen...at all. The idea, actually, is laughable.
