Early in the third quarter of the Georgia game some of the current Vols should have asked themselves “What would Al do?”.

Man I wish All had his degree...would be one heck of a coach!!!
Why does/should having a degree matter for coaching football? I mean the man proved himself as my favorite player each and every Saturday in college and carried that over to Sunday’s in the NFL.

Al Wilson is a VFL for sure. Al was a great leader for the Vols BUT he even he had to mature into that role. He didn't step on campus ready for what he eventually became for us. I try to remember that when these kids step onto campus with all the accolades etc. Henry T is a rare exception but even he had to learn from Bituli and others. Glad Jeremy is embracing our history and not trying to erase it. Good to see AW. Thanks for sharing.

Think it is a requirement.
That is sad then. I am not against higher education but it isn’t for everyone and does not diminish you by not having it.

Maybe he doesn’t have a desire to coach. I for one would love to see him roaming our sidelines again.

Those guys held that team together. We’ve missed leadership like that, if you messed you had to answer to Al. Who’s the leader of this team?

The money/media focus and social media does not help this situation. These are 18 year old kids that need some time and space to mature without a spotlight. Not saying they don't need consequences or our sympathy but most need a little space to grow.

Requiring coaches to have a degree is not sad, its smart. Hate to use the corny phrase but most of these athletes will go pro in something other than sports. Al Wilson was and is a rare athlete and competitor. He stood out among great athletes and competitors.

The right thing here is to set an example for
athletes to get a degree. If you ca play at a high level for a long time in major college football then you are smart enough to get a degree. College is way more about perseverance than IQ. With exceptions to the one and done juco guys like CP.

Not sure if Wilson wants to be part of the staff but if he does I am sure there is a way to work around the rule. I don't think everyone on the staff has the degree requirement. If he wanted to work up the coaching ranks then he would need a degree.

It is sad as I want the most qualified person for any job. Just having a degree does not make you that person. I’m not saying it doesn’t help as it can. However, I meet highly educated fools all the time. On paper they fit the criteria but there is no substitute for actual experience.

I see your point that most of the players will go pro in something other than football. However, that is what is wrong. I people coaching who know how to develop talent. When it comes to football I want someone who can teach football not how to write term papers. There are tutors for that and the VFL program to provide support if football will not be your career.
