Not a lot of people know it, but Alabama is an Arabic word. Two words, actually, "al abama." And it translates most literally as, "the dumbass." Or more loosely, "the land of the dumbass."

I know, you thought it was a native American word, like Tennessee or Ohio. That's what Al Abama natives want us to think. They put considerable effort into hiding the truth. But the phrase came here by another route. Specifically, the Spanish conquistadors,

As you may already know, Spain was occupied by Moorish (Islamic) invaders out of North Africa beginning in the medieval age and lasting right up until Christopher Columbus' day. Some eight hundred years--which means a great deal of culture transfer took place.

And thus was born the name of what would become, later in American history, the Dumbass state. Courtesy of fellas like Cortez, Balboa, and Ponce de Leon.

It's interesting you brought this to the board today because the other day I was reading The Letters of Cortés on the Internet Archive (as one is wont to do) and he says very specifically that he overlooked a particular city from a MOSQUE. It's a bit archaic, though. Remember, the phrase is as old as Shakespeare's English ("hoist with his own petard"). So a lot of modern translators won't recognize it. Google happened to, for me.
