Al Abama

Not a lot of people know it, but Alabama is an Arabic word. Two words, actually, "al abama." And it translates most literally as, "the dumbass." Or more loosely, "the land of the dumbass."

I know, you thought it was a native American word, like Tennessee or Ohio. But the phrase came here by another route. Specifically, the Spanish conquistadors,

Keep in mind, Spain was occupied by Moorish (Islamic) invaders from North Africa from the medieval time right up until Christopher Columbus' day. Some eight hundred years--which means a great deal of culture transfer took place.

And so America very early on got its dumbasses.

This is in what's now Mexico. So there were mosques in Mexico. It's a description of a Mesoamerican city he calls Chunjltecal. He claims it contained 20,000 citizens.

"This city has very fertile fields, for they have much land, and the greater part is irrigated; and the city seen from the outside is more beautiful than the cities of Spain, because it is very level, and contains many towers, for I certify to Your Highness that I counted from a mosque four hundred and odd towers in the city,"
