AJ "The Beast" Johnson

AJ and Maggitt were excellent as FRESHMEN. All FRESHMEN SEC, I believe. They played like freshmen at times. They will get better and possibly be among the best LBs in the SEC, but not last year.

Me thinks this is accurate.

The Bear said he equated it as one loss per season for every freshman that he had to start. It's a huge jump from HS to the SEC, and even uber-talent like AJ are going to make mistakes all over the field. This year should be a different story. Talent and intensity now married to experience should be fun to watch.

Hopefully the 3-4 does not create to much of learning curve for the LBs.

With Lathers back this unit should be pretty good,,, They missed LATHERS last year and it showed, :good!:

This. Lathers is one of the best in the SEC at stopping the cut back runs. Seeing/teaching that to AJ and Curt will be huge in their progression. They made freshman mistakes, but even with that they were as good or better than many LBs in the SEC. If the D-line had been more cometitive the ability would have shown more. And yes, AJ could equal Hightower now that he is playing inside. Remember that he played outside in the 4/3 last season - not his natural position.

They were well below average last year--slow to react and with countless missed assignments. I think they will improve, but it is silly to say they were good. Hopefully they have the potential to be at SEC level this year. Apparently you people have forgotten what good football looks like.

They played the way good prospects should play as freshmen starting in the SEC. No better and no worse. I think they will be the most improved unit on the team this year. But it is crazy to say they were "good" last year.

Johnson lead the team in tackles as a freshman, so yeah their pretty good. They did blow assignments but that's expected when u start as a freshman in the sec. I don't see how anyone can say their not good.

If I were an offensive coordinator, I'd try to isolate a quick scatback on aj. I'd try to force him to cover a really quick player. That will be his weakness I think. He's just not that fast cause he's so darn big. We saw some evidence of that last year. Part was playing lb in the sec for the first time. And part was a lack of speed. Let's hope sal prevents unfavorable matchups and that Aj's speed has improved. That said, he'd be the first lb I subbed with a db on third and long. I certainly wouldn't take out Herman or curt on an obvious passing down.

Yeah, I guess I jumped the gun. I was more excited about their future potential than what they might actually exhibit this coming season. But I definitely wouldn't classify AJ or Curt as below average in the physical department. When they made the right reads they were sure tacklers.

I wouldn't want to be the scat back. Any pitcher can out-run any hitter from the mound to first base. Linebackers are not faster than backs. AJ more experienced, lining up correctly and reading plays will alleviate the speed concerns.

Alot folks throwing around the word "good" right now. I think there talking about potential because that's really all we have right now.

He has had that nickname for awhile. I remember reading about it while he was still in high school.

AJ the bright star in a LB unit that's probably 3rd best in the East.

Dind-ding-ding. Exactly. In this league most freshmen don't play. A team with a lot of freshmen All-SEC is often a team with a losing record.

We are comparing these guys to SEC talent. Not the other freshmen around the league that couldn't crack the starting lineup due to depth. And I don't see a Dont'a Hightower on this roster.

and I don't see any retarded posters on this board.

Just a heads up. I've been talking to some of AJ's friends & they said that his nickname that he's been going by is "The Beast" & that he is living up to the nickname.

Can't wait to see The Beast win the East.

I have also heard this from several people and campus, including one of the coaches, i guess he's trying to get the nickname out to the fans. Also i have been told he has made it clear that he wants to be the Beast to Win the East on his way to an All-American Sophomore campaign. I sure hope he gets it! Also Curt Maggitt loves to be called legit.
