Actually, I am going to respectfully disagree with you on this. I don't think this is a case about black or white. I think most people here are defending AJ cause of his character that he has shown many times over. The guy has come across as a class act. You don't see anyone defending Mike Williams here....mainly because he hasn't proven himself to the fan base.
That being said, it's still possible that he did something horrible and if so then I think that everyone here.....or at least everyone with half a brain and some decency, will turn on him and cut him from our memory.
I agree that race is irrelevant; but have to disagree about why fans might support or defend one player more than another.
When do fans ever interact with players enough to make value judgments about their character? What are these instances where AJ has "shown his character many times over"?
And I don't mean these pet charity projects that coaches get the players involved in, either.
Cam Newton was in all of Meyer's charity projects, like volunteering at Shands Hospital etc.(there was even a huge article about it with a picture of him on the front page); and we all saw how he turned out despite that.
Most fans are defending AJ because he's a superstar and valuable asset to the team; a lot of fans probably hadn't ever even heard of Mike Williams until this story broke... that's why he's not getting as much support. If neither guy has been in trouble before, then they essentially have the same record or evidence of character.
But losing the services of a backup DB with 23 career tackles wouldn't negatively impact the defense nearly as much as losing AJ. When you say Williams hasn't proven himself to the fan base; you mean he hasn't proven himself on the field to the fan base. If the guy was an All-SEC/All-American CB, with the stats and play to back it up, I suspect he'd be getting some strong fan defense too... as long as he hadn't had any other discipline issues.
