Ainge yards

No way he throws for more yards then he did last year.

1. Our running game will be better. Or, to say it another way, surely it cant be worse.

2. Our receivers wont be nearly as good as they were last year. Do the new guys have more talent as a group? Yes. But its going to take time, and they're going to make mistakes. Its just the nature of the beast.

3. Meachem, I think, totally changed the way our offense worked. His presence opened up everything for Swain and Smith. Will any of our receivers draw a double this year? Not for awhile.

4. I know people are saying "well he missed some games so this year he'll have more yards by simply playing in more games".

Ainge has NEVER played every game in a season for his entire career. No reason to think it will suddenly happen now. Plus afaik this is the first time he's been hurt before the season began. Maybe he's just getting the inevitable injury out of the way.

These are valid points, but
he's also got another year of working with Cut, and will continue his improvement.

an improved running game should help his passing game, since the offense should be more balanced and he won't face nickel and dime packages all game.

I didnt say Ainge wouldnt improve. I definately think he will improve...but that improvement wont translate into more yards.

Don't forget this is also the 2nd year with TT being recievers coach! That's gotta count for something!

I look at it this way, 2004 our receivers weren't much more proven than they will be this year. At least there wasn't any "big" names in the rotation. Ainge has played alot in 4 years and is considered to be at least one of the best in the SEC. Between O'neal, Vinsion, & G. Jones that's at least 1500yds receiving right there!:salute:

Actually I think YAC will be close to last year for this reason. I think the WR's will have more YAC this year because Vinson, O'Neal and Jones aren't known for having outstanding hands, but outstanding speed. So expect a lot of hithces and slants this season. After that though it balances out because we will be passing to the TE's a lot this season, whom usually have low YAC.

This will be the best year for Tight Ends for UT since Jason Witten, even thought that wasn't that long ago.

That's telling, but you could expand on that. It may not be as much Ainge's fault as it looks. Since Tee Martin left, a UT QB has played every game in a season only twice. Casey Clausen did it in 2001 and 2003.

We never used Jason Witten to his full potential, which could be said of a lot of players I know (Eric Parker), but I think the tightend position as a whole is one that UT has never really maximized. If the tightends get any more catches than they did last year I will be really surprised.

That is a very good point. Ainge will want to find one of those guys in one on one and just get him the ball so he can make a move and gain some yards.

I'm a fan of the Cottams. In truth I'm a fan of offenses that use tightends effectively. I was watching the 2004 Florida game a couple nights ago. That catch Justin Reed makes in route to a flip into the endzone still gets me fired up. Ainge's throw on the play was even better. whew..

I remember that one. That was a sweet play. Would like to see a lot more of those this season with our depth at TE.

Agreed. Not only is it imperative we use the tight ends this year due to young receivers, I think the tight end should be utilized every year simply because it's good football strategy to keep the db's and lb's honest...
