UT scrimmage opens shakily, but improves

KNOXVILLE — Tennessee's season opener at Cal is only 13 days away and Vols fans are understandably excited.
The bad news?
The season opener at Cal is only 13 days away...

Yeah, USM is stout. They are a bowl team. I think they may give us more trouble than Cal, but I still think it is a 2-3 TD win.

That would be awesome, and with a Cal win I would think that UF would be a game we should be favored. But, as we all know, that is why we play the games! I am ready for the speculation to end and the party to begin. Could 2 weeks be any longer?

Seems like in this thread everyone seems to think Cal is a "W" already. And So. Miss is a tougher opponnet. I don't see it. I know Cal is trying to find answers on defense BUT Vols are trying to find answers on offense.

I just hope the Vols are not over looking Cal like some people are doing.

Cal is overrated. It isn't a guaranteed W, but no game is. We aren't trying to find answers on offense anyways.

All teams go through this. Its midway thru preseason practice and the urgency to perfect things before that first game is here. Look for a steady improvement and an ever increasing expectation gauge to be placed on them from here on out. Even Ainge realizes its time to get it right.

Nothing wrong with some hope, but as I said, that is why we play the games.

Yeah, they are usually a tough little team. They were 8-5 last year.

Unfortunately Troy lost its better players including the QB.

USM OTOH brings back a solid defense and one of the better RB's in the country. If UT can manage to beat these first 3 their strength of schedule should be very high.

BTW, Cal isn't a bad team and not a sure win. But there is no question in my mind that I'd take USM over Cal if they played.

There's an unusually high level of sanity in this post. Are you feeling alright?

Most troubling part of the story, IMO: kicking woes. You have to figure that at least a couple of games will be decided by a close enough margin that a missed FG or XP will mean an "L" for the only important stat.

I'm glad to see our defense seems ready to rock; they will probably be Ainge's saving grace as he tries to get the offense to gel. I sure hope our running game picks up significantly, as I don't not have much faith in our passing at the moment.

Who's going to be the playmaker at WR? Are the Vols going to be able to run the football when it counts? I think those are some big questions. On offense those are two areas that will stand between a 10-2 record and a 8-5 record this year.

Our kick coverage wasn't very good before the rule change. If things go bad, I expect more complaints about the kicking game than the offense. I don't know what worries me more, missed FG's and EP's or the lack of kick coverage.

Kick Coverage and returns ought to be a crucial component of our season this year....lets hope is a vast improvement over previous years...

i thought it would be more convenient this way. thetennessean.com is not a paysite to my knowledge......
Edited... There are other reasons for the whole "not allowing cut and paste". They deserve the traffic from their material. It has to do with advertisers and whatnot.

Next time consider posting a teaser paragraph as well as a link. But that's as much cut and paste we do... also put a quote box around the paragraph you grab from the article. :good!:

Good read too, thanks for bringing it up.
