Honestly besides the deep ball (which was great) I was most impressed with his field presence and decision making. I didn't see any terrible hurried throws really, or locking down on one WR and staring.

When he made the decision to run it was a quick actual run not a jog, and even though he had some early overthrows and WR drops, his mental state seemed calm and focused.

Good game, but needs to improve accuracy, throwing high.

Better than Nico.
I agree with this in general…I’m also willing to give it a pass considering his time on campus/in the system, first game, and several of his main targets being limited during preseason camp…it definitely needs to improve before we hit the meat of our schedule though

I don't think that he passed my expectations of how a Vol QB should play, but he definitely played very well given how long he's been on campus!

I was especially glad to see zero interceptions since this was the major knock on the guy.

I have to say my opinion on him will be fully formed in 2 weeks after the UGA game.

if he throws 3 TDs and 0 INTs against UGA then I will say he is playing well beyond my expectations!

Looks like Ty and Joey had a comparable day, statistically. Did Ty overthrow his receivers 3-4 times?
Ty's QBR was 48. Joey's was 62

Ty also threw the ball 43 times compared to Joey at 28.

Joey had basically the same passing yards and one more TD but threw the ball 50% less. So I'd say Joey had a better day.

Nah his 20 incompletions were all perfect, including the short hop ground balls to his shortstop, I mean wide receiver. He did have a nice accidental backhanded flip to his OL for -12 yards though. 9/10 that’s 6 the other way or hits the ground for into grounding and loss of down.
First game starting since HS and they lost to the team that came dead last in a 17 team ACC league.

I personally see the glimpses of 2022. The offense, when it’s has to go, seems more fluid. Unless it’s dialed down, we seem to be more complete and more options are there. Joey is good. RB’s are good. Defense is the question mark
Defense had 2 TO's and a TD. Show me another SEC defense that did that yesterday

I gave him a 7 out of 10. Had 2 good TD throws and has good wheels when he gets in trouble. He seems to manage the offense well on the field. Accuracy and dropped passes will kill us in SEC play. He's got to get better and so do the WR's. One or two of those will be picked off. SEC Now was giving him love this morning as their big surprise of the day.

I would add aside from his good plays; I was impressed by his decision to not force the botched snap on the goal line and just take the tackle for no gain/loss. Sometimes it’s better to have an even or negative play instead of a turnover. I’ve seen many QBs try to force a miracle in a situation like that and screw it all up. Worst case scenario you get a field goal there by taking the busted play. Better than nothing.

It worked out even better because we scored on the next play. That was a veteran move and it will help when we play the big three because there will be bad plays against stronger competition.

I completely agree with you. The defense was absolutely gassed after spending pretty much the entire third quarter on the field. If there’s one nitpick I have on Heupel’s offense is that if you’re gonna go conservative then bleed the clock. You can’t run three times up the middle in a minute and then force the defense back on to the field. That’s why I think with an offensive mind like Josh’s it’s better to just keep the foot on the gas and if you score 60 then you score 60. Especially when we could’ve been aggressive on one of those two 3 and outs in the third and completely shut the door.

When you play hurry up that is going to happen. He really almost needs 2 complete defenses

.goldvol,If you believe Joey to have had a mediocre performance then you need to stop playing Candy Crush while church is going on!His game wasn't perfect, but, well better than last year's QB.He ran well and quickly and made his decisions quickly.A whole season to improve over a good start.Go Vols.

Sailed a few passes, that will need to get cleaned up. But he made some beautiful throws and looks very comfortable back there. I think he will be solid

He did exactly what I thought he would. I figured CJH wanted to dispell any notions about whether we had a QB problem. He didn't do it for the media. He did it for the team. He wanted to let them know that this isn't a throw away year because Nico left and we have a 5 star coming next year.

I went 'neutral' only because I missed the whole game and only watched the 20 min highlights on youtube...

that said, the highlights made him look 'pretty good' to me....
