I was one of those who voted "no" and maybe my expectations were too high for someone who has played a ton of college football and was worth over 1 million dollars. I loved the deep ball TD to Staley and the TD pass to our new RB from Duke. I hated basic throws that were not even close to where they needed to be. Over and over. Most with zero pressure applied. If this was a performance against a rival or in a big game then sure. We were supposed to win this game and easy. His bad throws made Syracuse stay in the game. I wanted him as not only our transfer QB and starter. I was hoping for some refinement. Glad there were no interceptions. Our WRs deserve a "D" grade and that did not help. I am still excited for Aguillar as our starter and was actually good with the Nico trade and still am. Go Vols!

Lmfao.

He threw for 250 yards and 3TDs NO INT

Brazzell dropped 2
Matthews dropped 2
Others were questionable for WRs too...

So he actually was pretty accurate for 250yards 3TDs and ran for 30 something yards. Didnt hold onto the ball and take sacks like you know who either. He put up those numbers in a game where we also ran for over 220 yards by RBs. 250 total. In his 1st game as starter.

Your ridiculous expectations for a JUCO guy we grabbed from the portal AFTER spring practice are just that: RIDICULOUS

LMFAO.

" I REALLY THOUGHT THIS QB WE GRABBED AFTER SPRING PRACTICE WAS OVER WOULD THROW FOR AT LEAST 300 YARDS AND 4TDS IN HIS FIRST GAME....WAH"

BTW...we WON thst game by MORE than vegas said we would. It was EASIER than expected to be by the folks whose lives depend on picking football games.

So, you consider the way he played mediocre? He has been here since late June Early July and ran the offense very well. THe tempo was more what is expected from a CJH offense. When he cleans up some of the rushed throws that sailed high, it will be significantly better. Film to watch, a week to practice and a early season scrimmage to work out the kinks and it should hum like a well-oiled machine. I understand you expecting mediocrity, but don't understand how that is what you saw.
I’ve never seen a 57% performance I thought was better than mediocre. Can you name one historically except someone playing through injury or age?

When did Joey last play in junior college?

I think he does a lot of little stuff well, which equals big stuff. On the TD throw to Thomas he felt the pressure, drifted left, kept his eyes up and threw it where only Thomas could catch it .He has a good feel for the game the way Hendon did. Maybe that comes w/ experience, but the moment never looked too big for him. The only thing I think he missed on was the RPO on the slant inside the red zone . The ball got batted down and it might’ve been going the other way if it hadn’t. They might’ve bailed us out. I think if he can stay healthy, maybe learn to slide a bit earlier we have an opportunity to be very good offensively.

Yep. Not mind blowing stats, but under the circumstances, he was pretty great.
We know CJH sent two QB’s to the league who were not even game for their original teams. Really does make one wonder if what they say about his offense is true. Regardless, QB’s under his tutelage get looked at.

Did he surpass your expectations today? (To me, wow!)

Hard to say, I could only listen. But, from what I could tell, this being his first game as a Vol? He is a work in progress. And since next week is a cupcake game with ETSU, it needs to be a week where he improves, and nails down his spot. Part may have been the receivers failing to catch what Ramon Foster saw as catches they should have made. They really need a good week, now that they have gotten the first game in. Nothing like getting a win in the first week and being able to correct any flaws that are going to cost us against better teams.

Obvious he is gifted at QB. He made mistakes, I am sure. But still, comparatively? He has had the best start statistically of all the QBs Heupel has coached for the Vols so far. And that is against Milton Hooker, and that 5 star Judas Imaleaver.

That’s some sound logic there. I guess we should shut down the football forum to only actual Tennessee players based on that
He threw for 247 with 3 TD's and 0 Int's. We won and covered the spread handily. You called that "mediocre". So apparently your stats were much better in your playing days. So enthrall us all with the stats from your Top 3 college games as an SEC QB. I'm gonna make some popcorn to enjoy while reading.

Conveniently you’re leaving out his completion rate, missed opportunities, and turnover. You’re welcome to think however you want about his performance. Why do you care so much that I think 57% is mediocre?

Won’t truly know what he can do till he plays against Georgia. Win or lose that game if he plays well and doesn’t lose the game and hits a few deep balls and is a little bit more accurate…. But if he gets overwhelmed by ugga and goes 16/32 for 173 and 1 td and 1 int…..

TV makes it tough. Thought they did pretty good in man, but gave up free shots in zone, primarily over the middle.
We have been very bad in zone with Banks, this needs to be fixed, when we play zone any coach that is any good will attack us in the middle. With this said I think overll Banks is doing a good job.

Not so fast my friend. I kind of agree with his post. It seemed to me, in the beginning, that we had another over throw Joe playing. He did miss some easy throws. Now, it could be jitters but he was high and off.

Imo he played a very good game, take away the drops he would have been over 70% with 3 td, and no int. And Syracuse is not a Ga. but they are not a cup cake team either.

Like I was telling my friend as we watched the game unfold, we’ve had several good pedigree QBs over the last few years…each with numerous stars. In fact we’ve watched many of these guys come and go. That said, we’ve had very few “gamers” since 98. You could easily count them on one hand. But now you’ll have to add another to that list, bc Aguilar is a gamer! GBO!
