Aggie looking for info about Vols football

When I went to UT in 1971 I was amazed at how bad the Knoxville TV stations were. Having grown up near Nashville I was used to very good local TV news broadcasts and the poor Knoxville TV was a shock. A girl I dated told me how a girl that lived on her dorm floor went to one of the local stations and applied for a weather girl spot and got hired without any previous experience as a broadcaster or meteorologist. Very low standards. I used to cringe at the poor local commercials like the Caz Walker supermarket commercials. If you've never seen one you have missed a butt puckering treat. To each his own. I lived in Birmingham for 3 years while in school after UT and it was the same way though. I talked to a newscaster once in Birmingham who said he was reading the news one night and the guy running the teleprompter was so high that he passed out and the teleprompter went off. I would choose East Tn over West Tn though.

We are planning to move to TN soon. Daughter attended UTK for an event a couple years ago and loved it. She is considering being a Vol now.

I don't know much about Tennessee football/sports, other than the OT game at Kyle Field a couple years back.

Any important info us Aggies should know if we want to become adopted Vol fans?

East Tennessee is beautiful in the fall, Memphis has the best bbq, and outside of Nashville, not a whole lot in Middle Tennessee. Most importantly, welcome. GB

Biggest rival is usually a debtate between Bama and UF and it's usually determined by your age. The younger side usually sees UF as the biggest rival, the older side sees Bama. Unfortunately we haven't been successful in either one of those as we've only beat Florida once since 04 and the last Bama win was 06. Vanderbilt and Kentucky look at us as their biggest rival but real UT fans just laugh at UK since they have beaten us twice in the past 30+ years or something like that. Vandy will always be little bro despite winning a few recently, but the trend is heading back to normal.

I would say a lot of UT fans would agree that UGA has the most delusional and ridiculous fanbase in the entirety of the SEC. They think that program is God's gift to football despite their last national title was 1980. Yeah they've been the best program in the East the past few years, but they still can't get over the hump. They will soon be third best as UF is already on the verge on surpassing them and I think UT can in a couple years or so.

junk post. Have lived in Middle Tennessee and East Tennessee. Knoxville is the only town I have ever moved back to. Lived in 8 states. Knoxville isn't backwards, it's remarkable. Would rather live back in Kansas than Nashville...seriously.

Can concurr. Been living in Clarksville the past 3 yrs. East TN specifically Knoxville of course is THE best and ONLY part of the state one should consider living in TN.

You have to tear up when you hear the Tennessee Waltz played over the bells of Ayres Hall.

You have to visit Gus’ on the strip, and when you hear those 5 magical words “it’s football time in Tennessee” you have to feel like you could run through a wall.

That’s a good start to being an adopted fan. Anything short of that and you’re not taking full advantage.

I hate UF more as a whole, but I hate UGAs fanbase more. And as bad as some UF fans can be, it's not even that close lately.

Most hated rival / fan base. Gators are number one in my books trash talking players and fans. Bulldogs are running a close second. Born in Knoxville. Have lived in Memphis and middle Tennessee. Never again.

Middle Tennessee also contains the capital and a portion of the population that believes themselves superior to the rest of us. Most of the time they just turn out to be vandy fans.

The three regions are distinct. I'm an original southern middle Tennessee boy - down where no one goes without reason. However, I do love East Tennessee and the mountains. It's probably the most beautiful part of the state.

My best summation: West Tn- Blues, Middle TN-Country, East TN- Bluegrass. All great, kinda my Holy Trinity. BTW, Rocky Top is awesome in all 3 genres.

You're making the same trek as General Robert Neyland, though he came from Texas to Tennessee by way of West Point.

We Tennesseans like Texas. We think of it as our child, just as many of us think of North Carolina as Tennessee's parent. Tennesseans such as Davy Crockett played a big role helping Texas break free of Mexico and later join the Union. Think of fellas like Sam Houston, who was Tennessee's sixth governor, and later Texas' seventh governor.

All that to say that you will find welcome in the Volunteer state. You're already halfway family.

So, what to know about Tennessee football? Could write books. But other folks in the thread already hit a lot of what I'd say, so I won't be redundant.

It will all come with time living here. There's a fabric woven into the lives of every distinct group of people, and Tennesseans are no different. Most of us who have lived here since birth don't even think about it, never reflect on what it is at the core of our identity, but it's there. And some of it is really interesting. Has a lot to do with music and moonshine, hills and farms, selflessness combined with a joy at mixing it up a bit sometimes.

The 3 parts of the state are quite different. West Tn is the pits, East is, well different. The only place to live is Middle Tennessee. Try Sumner and Williamson counties first. Williamson is full of rich folks, think Titans, Preds, rich musicians and rich business people with the accompanying attitudes. Williamson is supposed to have the best public schools if you have school aged children although Merrill Hyde Magnet School in Hendersonville is rated the best high school in the state. I moved to Sumner county 35 years ago and love it. Has houses on Old Hickory lake (Kelly Clarkson's is for sale for $7.5 million) and rural areas that are quite nice. Shelby County (Memphis) and Davidson (Nashville) are the only 2 counties to vote Dem in 2016. My subdivision is full of out of staters. Native Tennesseans, which we are, are considered unicorns. I see lots of vehicles with out of state license plates all the time in my area. Lots of Illinois, Ohio, and New York but I see more Texas plates than any other.

Anywhere in Tennessee is better than most. (even Memphis, Mississippi)

The state has three grand divisions: East, Middle and West. The biggest towns in each are Knoxville, Nashville and Memphis. It's a little funny how it worked out, but the flagship football program for the state winds up being in the part of the state with historically the least recruiting depth.

Middle Tennessee has really become more of a recruiting hotbed in recent years, since Nashville and its outlying communities started exploding in population.

Memphis has always had a ton of athletes, but Memphis is a strange bird in terms of recruiting. If you live in Memphis, every program in the SEC West is closer to home than Knoxville is... except A&M. Odd as it sounds, even LSU is slightly closer to Memphis than UT is. So you get a lot of Memphis students playing for other programs like Ole Miss, because they choose to play closer to home.

So Tennessee recruits nationally, and has often had a lot of success attracting athletes from the Carolinas and Georgia. Clemson's recent strength has been at least in part due to their increased success recruiting the same areas we've typically drawn on. We've always had one of the largest recruiting budgets in the country.

Knoxville was once panned as being a "scruffy little city" but there is nothing like East Tennessee in the fall. RVs and boats start showing up days before game day, and you'll see orange everywhere. Far beyond regional TV, you'll see Tennessee orange on national commercials. It's a color that just grabs your eye, and it totally doesn't have anything to do with Dish Network founder Charlie Ergen being from Oak Ridge and a Tennessee alum.

Don't even get us started on our boosters, though.
