Aggie fans, you out there?

Here's a little scouting report on our team.

Offense -

QB: Trevor Knight has shown the ability to beat teams and has shown questionable decision-making at time. He has given up large running plays in favor of waiting too long to make a throw and sometimes tries to throw the ball into tight windows. He often locks in too long on his first read off the snap, so Mazzone (our OC) likes to call the quick stuff. He has been fairly accurate on deep balls, and I expect A&M to take more shots down field next weekend. If Trevor doesn't turn the ball over, we usually have great drives.

RB: We are led by two main RBs in Keith Ford and Trayveon Williams. Keith Ford was a 5-star out of Texas who transferred here from OU. He usually starts games and is a very strong runner but he also has great speed. After he starts wearing down teams we try and get big plays from Trayveon Williams, a freshman from the Houston area. Trayveon has the largest upside of any RB I've seen at A&M in a while. He has game-changing speed and I believe he's averaging about 8-9 YPC this season. His burst through the hole is what separates him from most RBs.

WR: Our receivers are all highly-touted and most will play in the NFL, but our best one and the guy that has the biggest chance to kill you is Josh Reynolds. He was a less heralded guy coming out of HS and went the JUCO route. He has been one of the best receivers in A&M's history the past 3 seasons. He has the most sure hands I've seen from a collegiate receiver in a while.

OL: We hired a new OL coach this past offseason who had been here before and coached up Luke Joeckel, Jake Matthews, and that whole NFL bunch. He has been in the NFL before and is very highly regarded. He has changed the dynamic of our OL, which is bookended by two seniors with 3 young guys up the middle. The 3 young guys up the middle have been the most impressive, but Tennessee's DL should be able to create some pressure there.

Defense -

DL - Obviously one of the strengths of our teams. I don't know the status of Myles Garrett but he is expected to be back. He's going to be a top 3 pick in this upcoming draft and Hall should be a late first-second round guy. The biggest improvement has been our DTs. They've been great against the run and creating pressure, and we have 4 or 5 star depth at every position on the DL that has come to fruition. Watch for Kingsley Keke, Zaycoven Henderson, Hardreck Walker, and Daylon Mack at DT. Mack specifically is especially gifted at picking up the snap count and getting in the backfield at lightning speed for a 320 pound man.

LB - Once a weakness of our team, the LBs have really stepped their game up this season under Chief and have been good. Alaka at MLB is quick and reads plays well, Shaan Washington at OLB is a former safety who really bulked up and he has been our best LB. We have Richard Moore on the other side is a bit undersized but is a lightning bolt and seems to navigate the game better than any of the other LBs in terms of instincts.

DBs - We have three really, really good safeties. Justin Evans and Armani Watts start at SS and FS, respectively, and have both been All-SEC type players this season. Donovan Wilson will come in for Evans and also plays the nickel frequently and is a heat-seeking missle. The biggest deficiency on our entire team is our CBs. That is where you guys will have to be able to take advantage of us down the field. That could be the difference in the game. Nick Harvey and Priest Willis are the starters and both haven't been terrible but haven't been great. I look for Tennessee to take some deep shots to draw some penalties on our guys.

Should be a great game, I don't know who is going to win and I don't really have a feel for the game, either. Looking forward to it.

Wow! Thanks!

Looking forward to another great SEC game against a quality opponent. I don't think either team has played their best game so maybe we'll see that this Saturday. I just hope we can both knock off Bama! Please travel safely and take in all that is Aggieland, it really is a special place. As Aggies we take our hospitality to visiting fans very seriously, you will be treated to as much as you can drink and eat at tailgates, please feel free to just stop in and say hello.

Howdy Vols.

I'm excited we're finally getting to play Tennessee, and how awesome is it that our first meeting in the SEC turns out to be a top ten matchup of two undefeateds?

College Gameday, CBS national broadcast, what more could you ask for?

I don't have a clue who's gonna win this game. We haven't had any opponents in common, and it's hard to judge how you guys will perform against us, and vice versa.

So I'll be a nervous wreck from kickoff till the game's decided.

For all of you that are making the trip, travel safely and I hope you're treated to warm Aggie hospitality.

Bienvenidos (welcome)!

Yeah man. In my opinion that College Gameday should be one of the better ones for this season.

I like our team, but as one of the Aggies commented on before, you guys seem to execute more ofteb on offense. Sumlin has been recruiting great and its showing now. Same thing for us.

We're missing 3 of our 4 best defenders but our defense is still making critical stops.

Were 7 point dogs to the Aggies, and Im actually in agreement.
It's gonna be an explosive game.

I can understand why the Aggies MIGHT be overconfident. Not saying we will win either A&M or Bama but I have much more concern for the A&M game than the Bama game. Don't misunderstand...not saying we win either and not saying we lose BOTH...with the Vols this year anything can happen....I'm just glad our defense has played well enough for us to win all 5 games with the 3 players out on defense that our own coordinator said pre-season we'd be a really good defense IF IF IF we kept Sutton, Kirkland, and Maybin healthy and we lose ALL THREE..that's what I'm most pleased about to this point..

I'm an Aggie living right outside of Knoxville.

Going to the game (hopefully if I can find a ticket).

I'd say our strengths are 1) stopping the run 2) rushing the QB 3) stopping plays like jet sweeps, bubble screens, etc. 4) running the ball

We are #1 in the SEC in rushing offense and total offense. Very balanced.

Our weaknesses are 1) defending the pass 2) boneheaded plays by Knight 3) giving up a lot of yards on defense.

Our defense is very "bend but don't break" sometimes, although a lot of the yards given up have been given up when the game is already in hand (Arkansas, Auburn, South Carolina). We've played 1 bad game - at USC. We were without 5 of our starters (Myles Garrett, Ricky Seals Jones, etc.) who are major contributors to the team. All are expected back and most were sat due to precautionary reasons (and because Sumlin probably thought he could beat USCE easily).

We are confident, but I wouldn't say over-confident. I am much more confident in our defense than our offense - which is saying something for A&M. Trevor Knight actually has very similar career stats to Josh Dobbs - he's actually run for a few more yards than Dobbs so far this year. Very similar QB's who can make a spectacular play and then a boneheaded play or miss a WR by 10 yards.

Edge Wise (IMHO) -

QB - Push
RB - Tenn (duh, Hurd and Kamara are beasts).
WR - A&M
OL - A&M (maybe not talent-wise, but the way they are playing right now).

DL - Push, although personally, I think the tandem of Hall and Garrett is a little better than Barnett and whomever is your other DE.
LB - Push (because of TN's injuries and how A&M's LB's have played).
CB - TN (our CB's are getting burned this year).
S - A&M (there are few safety tandems playing better than Armani Watts, Donovan Wilson (nickel) and Justin Evans). They are great against the run and decent against the pass. All of them will absolutely light up an offensive player.

Special Teams - TN (ours K and P are both Fish, although they've played pretty well so far).

Overall, I give the slight edge to A&M being at home and having played a poor game (and being pissed about it) and TN having an emotional win over GA. No doubt will be a great game.

This is great. I fully expect Aggie to play their best. We usually get everybody's best shot.
However, I believe UT (the real one) will finally play a full game this weekend.

Hiring Chief Chavis was the most significant hire in the SEC last year. Sumlin will always field a potentially good to great offense.
Now Aggie has a defense...

My Vol report

QB Dobbs is a sneaky good QB. Just when you think you have him bottled in, he can escape and make a difficult throw. And hes tough as nails.

Rbs- A lot of versatility. Hurd is the starter. Big physical back with good speed and runs hard, blocks well and catches well. Kamara is a swiss army knife. He plays in the slot. He's our Punt Returner. And he can carry the load at RB if need be.

WRs. A lot of versatility here too. Jauan Jennings is just a football player. Kid is physical and extremely confident. Josh Malone is a former 5 star who has shown that ability this year finally. Tyler Byrd is a freshman who is playing like a junior. Very tough and fast. Preston Williams and Josh Smith also have been known to make plays.

OL- I like our OL, but were going to have some trouble this week.

DL - Barnett, Vereen, Tuttle, McKenzie, Mixon, Kongbo, Obrien, Vickers have put this defense on their back. They've been taking over games late

LBs- Two guys in Colton Jumper and Cortez McDowell who are not starters, but are giving their all. They've given up some plays.
But they're holding our defense together.

DBs- Our CB situation isnt good. A&M should target this. Our nickel back Rashaan Gualden is pretty good. At safety we have two guys that stay active, but both have left some plays on the field.

I like that UT is the underdog in this game. We Vol fans believe we have a special team, and they'll be ready to play a very good Texas A&M.

This game in my opinion will be all about coaching...

If we get in a lot of 3rd a long situations, we win.

...or, is 3rd and Chavis only a figment of Vol fan's imagination?
Not a figment IMHO. Spurrier had Chavis figured out and knew that ol' Juan (yeah, I know it's John) played tight on the WRs on clear-to-figure passing downs (3rd...typically); that he made his safeties drop to "read" the middle, giving good odds on quick inside slants and mid-level crossing routes, which singles out LB coverage. Most of the time anybody using this strategy had an unusually high success rate...thus the term "3rd and Chavis." I've not paid attention to this aspect of ol' Juan's 3rd down strategies of late, but I'll bet Shoop has been. Let's see how Croom, Wolfe, Josh Smith, and guys who most often explore the center of the D will play their parts in this particular game. Let's maybe expect to see Byrd darting in the middle on those critical downs. I hope these Texans play too loose and overconfident and Cosmo Dobbs will lay out some big ones to JJ and Malone and speedy Byrd (faster than Noil?) and PW (Did I miss anyone?). Dobbs is more dangerous than previously with the throw game evolving more in the direction we'd been hoping for, so packing the box isn't going to be an option for tamu. I think we've got them outmanned overall...particularly our RBs and Dline. 'Just gotta' eliminate that first half coma syndrome? AMIRIGHT?

Howdy,

Just joined the board to have some civil discourse with a fanbase that we have very limited experience with. Thanks for having me.

As far as the game goes, I felt much more confident about A&M winning at halftime of the UF game. I watched UT versus Appalachian State and Ohio and was a bit underwhelmed. I also watched the second half of the UF game and was very surprised. I guess you could say the same about A&M relative to whether you watched the Auburn / Arkansas game or the South Carolina game.

A&M's strength is really the Defensive Line. Obviously the DE's are special, but the DT's are good and we rotate 5 in without a major drop off. Major drop off when we rotate the DE's which Chavis will do in order to keep them rested for the 4th quarter. LB's have been a bit of a surprise, but are probably a mid-tier SEC group. The Safety Play has been phenomenal with three future High NFL draft picks back there. Cornerbacks have been a bit up and down and are definitely the weak spot in the Defensive Scheme.

Best thing about this year has been the steady play against the run. Running game defense has been our achilles heel for years, but we have shut down three pretty good running offenses in UCLA, Auburn and Alabama.

On offense, we have done pretty well, but I am not sold on our running game. We lead the SEC in running, but it is not the type of offense that can run the ball when everyone expects us to run it. Closing out 4th quarters has been an issue in part because of this. We do, however, have a lot of long, explosive runs from our QB and our Freshman RB (Trayveon Williams - who goes for 100 almost every game on about 12 carries) as opposed to a grind-it-out, wear the defense down type of game (like Bama).

Trevor Knight is a gutsy leader, but a bit inaccurate. WR corps is pretty good with Josh Reynolds good for a long-gainer every week (40 yard TD vs UCLA, 92 yard TD vs Arky, a couple of 50+ versus Auburn). Christian Kirk is more of a perimeter player with the screen game. Hasn't been as explosive as last year, but is still pretty good. Missing RSJ (who I expect to not play) will be big as he is a big target. Speedy Noil has been a major disappointment.

Special teams are solid in all phases.

I would expect all of the injured players to be back except for Ricky Seals Jones and probably Keith Ford. This will be a big issue as RSJ is good in the run game and is a big target. Ford is solid banger who is not explosive but wears down a defense and keeps Tray Williams from getting too many carries. His backup (James White) has had a fairly unimpressive career to date.

Garrett was held out as a truly precautionary measure as he played post-injury against Arkansas and practiced all week. Staff felt like they could beat USC without him and they were correct. The other two injured starters were in concussion protocol and should probably be good to go although one of them (Noil) may not even start anymore as his backup led the team in catches vs USC and Noil has been a major disappointment throughout his career.

As far as who wins, who knows? I do believe that the SEC West is the tougher of the two divisions and that the SEC East (except for UT) is fairly pedestrian (Ole Miss had UGA beat by halftime at Sanford last week and UF almost lost to Vandy). We have played well against the upper middle tier of the SEC West / Pac !2 but are untested against the top Tier (Bama, Ole Miss and possibly LSU post-Miles)

However, you have great WR's and a mobile, running QB which plays well against A&M's weakness at CB. If the Safetys have to support the CB's, then the run defense / blitz packages will take a major step back. I don't really know much about the UT defense, but I will say that A&M (with all its supposed explosiveness) is terrible at 3rd down conversions and is prone to make costly mistakes.

Will be an electric atmosphere. Kyle Field is very loud, but that hasn't really translated into big wins within Sumlin's tenure. I wouldn't say the general fanbase is overconfident, but cautiously optimistic. Of course, every fanbase has a few guys who are delusionally overconfident and they usually stand out as a sore thumb. I hope and think we will win, but wouldn't be surprised if we lost (if that makes sense). I think A&M will win, but by 3 points or less and I am not overly confident in that even.

Should be a great Saturday in the SEC.

I have some family in Texas, met many TAMU fans while there.

The stadium they all want.to see the most in the SEC is Neyland.

Many of them believe that UT fans are the only ones that may be able to match their noise and participation level.

But as far as this years game..they do not think Chavis will let us come back from behind like other teams have..so feel if they jump out to a lead in beginning then they win.

But if we play well the entire game then it will be a fight to the finish, maybe possible overtime..

None I have spoken with think we can pull out ahead of them..they have an extreme amount of confidence in their defense and chavis
Someone needs to remind them, I think in 97 we were up on Florida 37-17 wound up losing 63-37 n swamp if my memory is right....

Nice report fellow SEC fan (except...check pgph. 3. You haven't played Alabama yet...no doubt you meant Arkansas). I lived in Austin from '90 to '97 (Hyde Park near the faux UT campus), then bought a horse ranch a few miles from Manor Downs ('97-'02)...vetting all of my quarter horses exclusively by A&M grads...the best in the world. I'm now retired on a ranch in SC...miss those top-notch Aggie veterinarians. I enjoyed your assessment and noticed you brought up Chavis' one-and-only achilles heel, which is inside routes on obvious passing downs. Let's see how this works out with a team that's aware of this. 'Hope you can visit Neyland in the future, Ag87. Whatever occurs Saturday, I expect a terrific game from two of the SEC's best teams AND watched by the most knowledgeable fan bases. Let's hope for even refereeing, equal breaks, no injuries and may the best footballers win.

This is a game I wish I was attending but I've got to be elsewhere. I don't think our fan bases have built up enough bad blood to hate one another. This should be a really fun trip for the Vol fans that travel.

On their boards they all seem to agree that if they are healthy than it is an easy W.

They must really have a self-inflated sense of how good their team is. It's amazing how most fans on our board are showing them respect and think it will be a good game that we might lose, but their fans expect our team to just roll over and not put up a fight. Have they watched our team play? Did they watch their team against USCe?

This is going to be a dog fight. They very well might win, and probably will, but thinking it's an easy W is just being naive honestly.

Just FYI. Any Vol fans flying into Houston, do everything you can to avoid rush hour traffic on Friday. Getting North on I45 between 4:00pm and 6:30 can be miserable.

Almost all of the Aggies commenting in this thread believe it's going to be a tight ball game.

They look like the better team. Not by much though. We're playing complementary football. Our defense is still getting stops.

Our offense is making crucial plays.

Both teams have senior QBs that are used to winning.

They have the 12th man. We should be the underdogs. But you're right Vercase, it's going to be a dogfight.

Dobbs is going to have to control the game.

You are correct on Bama (Doh! on my part). Meant Arky. Heck, if we were 5-0 with a win vs. Bama we might be ranked #1!!

Would love to do Neyland. It is the one SEC venue that we all wish to attend one day.

I'll drink to your last comment regarding a good, fair game. May the best team win!

Speedy
Kirk
Drawing a blank on the last one...

Stop the run.
Contain Knight
Pray we can cover until Barnett gets home

Reynolds. He's our best receiver so far this year IMHO.

Our weapons are:

Kirk (on jet sweeps; bubble screens).
Ricky Seals Jones (over the middle).
Reynolds (down the field).
Knight (designed runs)
T. Williams (running outside - he's fast, averages 9 yards a carry)
Ford (running between the tackles).

Just FYI. Any Vol fans flying into Houston, do everything you can to avoid rush hour traffic on Friday. Getting North on I45 between 4:00pm and 6:30 can be miserable.

Take Hard Toll Road North from George Bush Airport... It will dump you out in The Woodlands on I45... Go north on 45 to Conroe. Exit 105 West, and that will take you all the way to Navasota where you will get on Hwy 6 North to College Station (about 20 miles).
