Can I say how excited I am that we have Shoop running the D now! I watched every game last year and realized we had an issue with letting other teams come back but watching that misery now only makes it that more apparent. Man if we were more aggressive on D we had a legitimate shot at running the table and I'm not just saying that because I'm a huge Vol fan. We really had a shot and we "Let 'em off the hook!" every time. I have a feeling we are going to be watching a very dominate team this season and Shoop will be the reason why. He may not be able to fix every flaw on D but he will fix our biggest one in that we were entirely too conservative in the 2nd half of games. Can Thursday get here soon enough???

The offense also has to realize they must give 100% and go kick some tail whether they are down 14 or up 14. There was some playcallint issues, sure, but watching the team in the 1st half they are unstoppable... Then they give half effort.
But watching the 1st half Vols I was like dang this team should be really good and I believe they know how to finish and have the hunger.

Yeah I'm excited to see that they closed out games in the 2nd half of the season. Albeit against to inferior competition but great to see nonetheless. Sunday thru Thursday will be the longest few days but the season truly starts on Sep 24th. We should have a nice couple of tune up games to get ready for those lizards.

I missed it because I was watching Fulton vs Maryville...you think some of it could have been lack of depth and getting tired?

Coaching should really help, but the D has to tackle better, they have to wrap up, missed tackles were costly last year and the prior year....
Alignment, is one thing, physically tackling must improve individually across the board ...Sutton is indeed included in this group that needs improvement wrapping up the ball carrier.......remember we have mostly the same players as last year plus a few frosh

When we get up 14 we have to put the nail in the coffin. I wish Debord would call every game like he called the UGA game. I still say the offense done it's job last year getting us those leads. Play calling was stale at times absolutely, but defense needed a handful of stops and we were 10-2 no doubt. I have a hard time saying 11-1 because I don't think we were going to beat Arkansas. Their line took that game over in the 2nd half.

I have a hard time believing it was a depth issue when we were sitting on 2 double digit 4th quarter leads. It speaks to coaching.

I agree with you often. But on this one I don't. The biggest issue we had last year sat squarely on John Jancek and his inability to run a high caliber defense.

True. But I will say going into a shell offensively and having multiple three and outs didn't help matters either. There's plenty of blame to go around. Depth also was a big issue, and maybe conditioning. The depth issue seems to be fixed barring injuries. The defensive coordinator issue is fixed. I just hope the offensive staff and Butch learned from last year and hold up their end. That's my biggest concern.

I hated the DeBord hire and hated his early playcalling, but I thought he improved as time went on and started figuring out the SEC's speed.

I greatly changed my opinion and I think he's been a positive influence on the O and will have a power element we've lacked for a long time.

I think he and Shoop will be a strong tandem this year.

We finished games at the end of last year the way we should have, beat teams the way we should have. The offense was up in almost every category last year. Somebody's head had to roll for blowing those games and it wasn't going to be Debord's and it shouldn't have been. Not saying that's what you implied because it wasn't. But 4th and Jancek killed us last year, we looked like world beaters coming after the QB for 3 quarters and it was like Jancek went into prevent and tried to preserve instead of throwing the knock out blow. I do agree that we went ultra conservative on offense, especially against Florida those last few series were awful, but I'm gonna stick to thinking the defense let those games go. The entire complection of the Oklahoma game changed when Maggit went down, he played his satchel off until he got hurt. As you said, the defensive issues have been fixed so that leaves it only one other way to go this year if you feel it was the offense and not the defense last season.

I agree, Shoop won't play the sit back conservative game on defense. But I don't think we could have ran the table on in that Bama beat us straight up. Our defense played great, even on the last drive, but Ridley made the plays to keep the drive moving, even over Cam. But that game was a close game? And it wasn't just because they were tired as some have tried to claim. They weren't tired the week before when they beat aTm by 3 touchdowns. I expect to be able to win every game this year but will still predict 11-1. In hoping that one is to aTm and we beat Bama cause we are better than them this year. They have more depth as they have more depth than anybody, but our starting 22 is better. They are also starting a true freshman at right tackle and maybe even a freshman QB. This is the year the Vols no longer are the joke of college football. We are about to earn our respect
