After watching Newton and Simms....

Who would you rather have, based on QB skills alone?

Newton. Although, we wouldn't be able to fully use his capabilities with the style offense we will be running.

Don't start to dog on Simms. It's WAYYYYYY to early to compare the two. Just look at CrompDaddy, he struggled at the first of the season, but towards the end of the season there were few QB's playing better than him. I have hope in Simms. Give him a chance.

I'd rather not make a judgement after only seeing Simms for 1 game. How about we do this survey in 4-5 weeks?:hi:

Good question.

My opinion, Cam fits Auburn/MStates offense better. He does have a nice touch but seems to be a little soft. You can get away with this if your offense is set up to use your QB as a run option. I do not think Chaney's play style fits this mold. Simms has some speed for roll outs on play action and can read the d nicely and seems to have a bit more power to his throws.

Since you brought up the question about a mobile QB versus a more traditional and I gave the typical response, I will say I was impressed with Massoli's sharp passes on the roll out in last weeks Ole Miss game. The guy has an arm...heck even two. I think Massoli is more a complete package than Cam. (On the field football time only) I guess I mean to say I see Cam as a decent QB with an offense that fits his strengths. UT not being that offense.

It's not like he was up against a great or even decent defense.... it was UT-Martin...

Don't forget, we are comparing watching Newton against an SEC defense, on the road, in his first SEC start after CC, against Simms who played against a terrible UT-Martin at Neyland.

Unless Simms pulls a rabbit out of his hat, this one's not even close.... Newton > Simms

Simms was off target on several passes last week, even some of the completions... 2 that come to mind is the play where Jones hurt his hand, that ball was thrown waaaay to late and the TD throw to Moore, Moore left his guy in the dust and Simms underthrew him and the defender almost caught up to the pass to knock it down. Any SEC cornerback would have caught up to that throw and broke it up resulting in an incomplete pass and NOT a TD...

Absolutely absurd to even attempt and make that decision at this point. We have seen Simms play in 1 game against a meaningless opponent. Why don't we let them get several games under their belts first.

I understand the comparison for the first game. My point is that we should not make a final judgement based on one performance. Let's see what they look like after 4-5 more games.:eek:k:

Why are we even discussing this? Simms was a product of the Kiffin regime that Dooley inherited. In his first game he threw for over 180 yards with no interceptions, while our running game posted 300+ yards. Why be critical of Simms prematurely? We don't really know yet what he can or can't do. He's a completely different type of qb from Newton. Let's give the kid a chance before questioning his skills... Dang!

The main reason I like Newton has nothing to do with skill: He is 250 lbs and fast. That kind of athlete would come in handy against aggressive and fast SEC defenses.

The point of this thread is to discuss whether or not you would rather have Simms or Newton. Obviously we have Simms because Kiffin wanted him. Dooley didn't even have a hand in that decision. I think Simms will be fine once he gets some more reps and experience. Yes, he overthrew and underthrew a few times on Saturday, but man give him some time to get a rhythm. He looked pretty good in the 3rd quarter and has yet to throw an interception - not to knock on Crompton, but it's nice to get through a game without an interception from your starting qb...

Crompton was a hero at this point last year and went straight to zero in the next game. Way too early to tell anything about anything.

But I think everyone here knows I'd rather have Newton.

Proclaiming Newton a superior QB does not mean that I think Simms is bad. I think he is completely capable of making good decisions and decent passes. I just think that having a gargantuan athlete with a good arm is a better option for a team that has the most inexperienced O-line in the SEC.

Newton. With the shape the line is in right now it would help to have a Pass-first QB with the ability to run away from the rush

I was actually pretty impressed with Simms, maybe it's just because I expected him to come out looking like Crompton last year early on...idk

You're telling me you'd rather have Simms at this point than Crompton at this point last year?? You're forgetting how good Crompton looked against the Hilltoppers.

Sam,
I respect your views, and I personally wanted us to go after Newton last year. Yes he seems a lot more elusive than Simms, but while we're trying to dig ourselves out of this pit we've been in the past several years (largely due to the laziness of a former coach) - let's stay encouraged and keep the faith until we have a reason not to. Instead of posts like this that discourage our team and our fans, let's focus on the good things - NO INTERCEPTIONS!!!

That makes zero sense. You're on a message board. These kind of discussions are what it's made for.
