After catching the Tenn. NC game I wonder...........

for a gameplan that hadn't worked in 3 years, you'd think dungy would try something different. everyone knew what was coming, and hence polamalu getting the pick, only to be incorrectly reversed, allowing manning to pick up 3 more completions and 30 more yds to his stats. everyone knew what was coming on their next drive and how did that turn out? a 4th down sack that almost iced it. that blundering D that can't do anything actually caused a fumble from one of the best red zone players in the game giving manning another chance. started moving the ball, only to have two straight incompletions, setting up a 46 yd FG. that's a lot of field goal.

It didn't work that well against the Patriots. Against everyone else, it had been pretty successful. Also, causing one fumble does not make a defense competent.

never said it made the defense competent. Just noted that they made a play.

Also, I would like to see a coach that would willingly change what his offense has successfully done for an entire season in the first game of the playoffs. That's the kind of decision that results in confusion, a loss, and a firing.

how many years can this style be used w/out reaching the super bowl and be claimed a success? a lot of coaches get fired over that too.

Bill Cowher had a tough time reaching the Super Bowl, as well. He won it last year doing the same thing he's been doing for years.

cowher has two super bowl appearances with his style with one ring. by my calculations, that is two more appearances and one more ring than the colts have with their current style

he was also on a hot seat for his recent struggles to get there. last year cooled it down.

I think that all took a lot more than three years. I also think he had several years where he failed to even reach the playoffs.

ten playoff berths in 14 seasons under cowher. i wouldn't call that "several". those berths have resulted in six AFC title games

I think it's very telling that Tampa won a Super Bowl immediately after they canned Dungy. Some guys are good at building a team to a certain level, but they can't ring the bell.

Peyton only wins when it doesn't matter. at least that's what i've concluded in his football career. He represents the university well and gives them a bunch of money but all the attention he gets from fans makes me sick.

When I first read this and saw your avatar, I thought "I have never seen vol_freak come out so strongly against peyton before"

As for the NFL. I dont think I have to bring up his 635 passing records Manning has so lets talk playoffs. After all, playoffs are the ONLY big games in the NFL, right?

Manning: 22-26 for 377 yards and 5 TD's against the Denver Broncos. His four TD passes in the first half tied a playoff record. When he left game in the fourth quarter he had a perfect passer rating of 158.3 for the second time in the 2004 season, the fourth perfect playoff game in NFL history.

Manning: 22-30 for 304 and 3 TD's in a huge win against the KC Chiefs @ Arrowhead. Isn't KC considered the hardest place to play after December? Especially in the playoffs?

Manning: 27-33 for 457 yards and 4 TD's against Denver (another huge game against the Broncs) in a game that was over by halftime. The Broncos' secondary talked tough in the week leading up to the game, promising to bump the Colts' receivers off their routes by playing physical football. They were silenced right away by Manning, however, who led Indianapolis to a quick 35-3 lead before coasting through the second half.

How about a game where the defense blew their load, you say? Sure.

Peyton Manning: 17-32 for 194 yards, 1TD against Miami Dolphins in 2000. Peyton didn't have his best day stats wise but made zero mistakes and gave Edgerrin James the ball plenty. 14-0 halftime lead. In the second half, the Dolphins came out and ran the ball down Indy's throat. Lamar Smith ran 40 times for 209 yards. AGAINST ALL THAT, Manning drove his team down for a potential game winning FG set up for Mike Vanderjagt. What happened? You guessed it. Botched. Just like last year against the Steelers.

Would you like me to stamp the owned sign on your ass now or later?

Very convenient that you leave the Colts being shut out by the Jets and their decimations at the hands of the Patriots and Steelers out of your little playoff litany. Nice job destroying your credibility in your very first post.

I figured the Manning bashers spent enough time on his poor games. Not many people bring up his playoff wins.

Good post and welcome aboard. Most of us agree with the pro coaches and talent experts that PM is the best QB at any level at the present. It may not be his karma to win a ring, time will tell, but don't let a NegaManning discourage you!:eek:k:

also got some good bounces of the ball...the turnovers in the FL game, the missed FG by FL in OT, the Stoener fumble, the fumble returned for a TD against Auburn etc, etc, etc...

not saying it was all luck mind you, but we did get the breaks that year, as most NC teams do at least once or twice during a run like that.

Gotta agree with the above. When I looked at the schedule before the season started, the toughest games were Syracuse and Florida. Those two games would make or break the Vols for 1998.:eek:k:
Well, we won at Syracuse with a FG with 4 ticks left on the clock and we beat the Gators at Neyland in OT on a FG -but the Gators FG kicker was inconsistent-thank goodness!:dance2:
Little did we all know that after the first two games that the Hogs would be a tough opponent. Vols and Hogs meet and both are 8-0! Well, the big break as we know was: FUMBLE! The rest of the season was HISTORY! We beat Mississippi State in the SECC game(they rarely win the West!) with some "defense" and beat the Seminoles in the Fiesta Bowl-NC game with some GREAT DEFENSE!:dance2:
What a season to remember!
Does anyone have the tape of the Vols season, the SI special edition or the SEC championship or Fiesta Bowl tape? I have the Vols season(highlights) and the SI special edition.

you're right they don't. wins over teams with very little reason to be in the playoffs don't count.

Wasnt KC like 14-2 that year with the 1 or 2 seed?

Since when do teams have little reason to be in the playoffs? Someone tell last years SB Champion Steelers they have very little reason to be in the playoffs because they barely got in.
